Michael Petrina, a 64 year old man from Arlington, Virginia, won the state spelling bee title 51 years ago, but has been out of the spotlight since. Petrina has been determined over the past 50 years to regain the dominance he once possessed and on Sunday, June 21, he did it.
Petrina won the AARP’s National Spelling Bee competition by successfully spelling the word “woad”, a plant whose leaves yield a blue dye. Petrina won $500, a trophy, and a dictionary kit. He was not available for comment.
From all of us here at the Pinkie, a big congratulations to Michael Petrina for once again proving his dominance in the competitive spelling world. However, I do have one question: what is a dictionary kit!?!?!?!?!?
