CINCINNATI – General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the re-signing of free agent IF/OF Jerry Hairston Jr. to a 1-year contract through the 2009 season. Hairston, 32, in 80 games for the Reds last season hit .326 and played 6 positions (7g at 2B, 1g at 3B, 34g at SS, 24g in LF, 17g in CF, 12g in RF). The team went 25-19 when he batted in the leadoff spot.
One of the Major Leagues’ most versatile players, Hairston has appeared in 530 career games at second base, 265 games in the outfield, 40 games at shortstop, 13 games at third base and 1g at first base.
Good sign for the Red Legs as Hairston provides Dusty with a productive right-handed bat who can play multiple positions and plug multiple holes in the batting order.
