Game 5 Recap: Cubs 6, Brewers 5

For the second strait game a two-run rally in the ninth propelled a squad to victory. This time it was Alfonso Soriano’s one-out two-run YAK EM! that gave the Cubs the come from behind victory, just as the Brewers had done the night before.
Prince Fielder kicked things off with his first bomb of the season. A 3rd-inning moon shot to right that scored Corey Hart ahead of him to give Milwaukee the 2-0 early lead.
Kosuke Fukudome, who has obviously snapped out of his late season ’08 funk, promptly answered with a solo shot of his own to lead off the fourth.
Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano gave that run right back via singles by Billy Hall, Mike Rivera, and Rickie Weeks. Zambrano went six innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, walking three, and striking out seven.
Back-to-back doubles by Soriano and Fukudome cut the Brewer lead to 3-2, and the Cubbies loaded the bases to start the seventh. Zambrano was pinch-hit for with Hoffpauir, who struck out. Soriano then tied the game with an RBI groundout and Fukudome struck out to send it to the stretch.
Angel Guzman came on to pitch the bottom half of the seventh and once again, the Cubs gave the runs right back. This time Guzman walked Corey Hart and Ryan Braun with one out before being lifted in favor of Neil Cotts.
As has been the trend lately by the Cubs pen, Cotts walked the only guy he faced, Prince Fielder to load the bases.
Aaron Heilman came in and allowed J.J. Hardy of soap opera fame to knock in two with a single before striking out Mike Cameron to end the inning.
Aramis Ramirez cut the Brewers lead to one with his second home-run of the year off Mark DeFelice with two down in the eighth.
Ninth Inning, enter Carlos Villanueva: the Brewers makeshift closer due to all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman being sidelined with a strained right oblique. Villanueva got Koyie Hill to fly out before giving up a pinch-hit single to Reed Johnson. Joey Gathright pinch-ran for Reed, but after the next pitch, Don Zimmer could have been on the basepaths and scored.
Soriano hit Villanueva’s next offering deep and out for his third jack of the season and a 6-5 Chicago advantage.
Carlos Marmol came in to work the ninth. He got Weeks to groundout to second before giving up a base-knock to Hart and allowing Brewer fans to think there might be ninth inning magic two nights in a row. Nope. Marmol struck out the heart of Milwaukee’s lineup, both Braun and Fielder to end it and even up the series heading into tomorrow night’s Sunday Night Baseball matchup on ESPN.
Heilman gets his first win as a Cub and Marmol picks up his first save of the year. Villanueva suffers both his first blown save and loss of 2009. With the win the Cubs move to 3-2 and drop the Brew Crew to 2-3.
