Cubs vs. Cardinals Postponed, Sweet Lou Tweaks the Rotation

Due to stupid weather, the final game of the Cubs-Cardinals series has been postponed. The two teams will make this game up on July 12 as part of a day-night doubleheader. The Cubs took two of the first three games played in this series and were looking to take three of four on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. I hate rainouts so much, they make me sad.

Everyone hates rainouts

Here’s a brief rundown of the other Cubs news from the weekend:

Starting Rotation Tweaked: Cubs manager Sweet Lou Piniella announced he was altering the starting rotation for the upcoming series against the Cincinnati Reds. Theodore Lilly, who has been ill the past few days, was scheduled to start tonight against the Cardinals, but instead will pitch game two against the RedLegs on Wednesday. Rich Harden and Carlos Zambrano will stay on schedule and pitch games one and three on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Sean Marshall will be available in the bullpen for the first two games against the RedLegs and will start Saturday in St. Louis.

Milton Bradley Update: Cubs right fielder Milton Bradley is scheduled to be back in the lineup on Tuesday. He has not started the past five games due to a strained groin. The oft injured Bradley has also officially appealed his two game suspension for allegedly making contact with home plate umpire Larry Vanover after a contested third strike call Thursday against St. Louis. After watching the replays of the incident, two things are clear: 1) It was not a strike and 2) Bradley, as he argued, made contact with Vanover’s hat as the bill pushed up on the umpire’s head. I’d expect Milton to get the suspension reduced to one game, but it would not surprise me if the suspension was held up due to Bradley’s history of umpire conflict.

Lou Piniella is Hilarious: Even though most Cubs fans were already aware of this, the Sweet One has yet again produced hilarious quotes when speaking to the media. His latest two gems come from Sunday’s meeting with the media prior to the game being postponed. When asked about his bullpen situation, Sweet Lou responded with, “Our bullpen situation…is our bullpen situation.” Sweet Lou wasn’t done yet, when asked about his Sunday starting lineup that did not include Derrek Lee, who is notorious for never wanting to miss a game, Piniella said, “I was hiding from him.” I love Lou so much.
