Cubs Acquire Ryan Freel

According to Dan Connelly of the Baltimore Sun, the Cubs traded reserve outfielder Joey Gathright to their perennial trade partner, the Baltimore Orioles for utility man Ryan Freel. Gathright has already cleared waivers and will be assigned to Norfolk, the triple A affiliate of the Orioles.

Freel had his best years while playing the super utility role for the Cincinnati RedLegs. Freel spent five years in the ‘Nati, and while he is not an everyday player, he does provide solid defense and all out hustle everytime he steps on the field. He has had injury problems of late, most notably a string of concussions. However, if the Cubs can get the mostly back to normal Ryan Freel then this is a good move.
