Ladies and gentlemen, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year and best catcher on the Senior Circuit, Geovany Soto

This man is awesome. Why? First of all, his name is Geovany. Second, he’s awesome. Third, see above reasons 1 & 2. But seriously, it is looking like the Chicago Cubs have found a long term solution to the catcher position after years of one and two year wonders behind the plate. Let’s take a look at what Geovany has accomplished after just one full season as the starting catcher for our beloved Chicago Cubs.
Soto played 141 games during his rookie season, batting .285 with 23 yak ems, 86 RBIs, and a .364 OBP. He also managed to become the first rookie ever to be the starting catcher in the All-Star game. Those accolades are nice and indeed deserving, however more important was his ability to handle the pitching staff as a rookie.

From day 1, being named the starting catcher to a veteran heavy pitching staff did not faze young Soto. He took charge of the staff and as most baseball people will tell you, looked like he belonged from the start. He was not afraid to tell staff ace Carlos Zambrano to man up and get his act together if the situation called for it.
He is not an elite defensive catcher yet. He only threw out 26% of those who attempted to steal against him, but most catchers do improve defensively as their careers progress and Soto’s arm strength has never been questioned. However, this is all not to say he is strictly an offensive minded player. Soto blocks balls in the dirt very well and calls a very good game at this stage in his very young career. If you pay attention to Cubs broadcasts, former major league catcher Bob Brenly will frequently laud Soto’s ability behind the dish.
