Kicking Off The 135th Kentucky Derby

Today it was announced that LeAnn Rimes will be singing the National Anthem at the 135th Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Why is this pertinent? It isn’t. But it gives me an excuse to pen the Pinkie’s first post (of many) leading up to quite possibly, year-in-and-year-out the greatest day on earth, Derby Day.

For the next two weeks the city of Louisville and its surrounding suburbs will be hopping with chow wagons, steamboat races, hot air balloon shows, and much, much more. Be sure to keep loggin’ on to the Pinkie to stay up to date on all the action around town.

Beginning this morning, for only $1, at the water tower at River Road and Zorn Avenue, you can try for a hole-in-one and a chance at a cool $1 million.

The “official” kickoff of Derby Festival comes this Saturday in the form of a 3pm airshow followed by the nation’s largest fireworks display, the 20th annual, Thunder Over Louisville.

Finally, on Saturday, May 2nd the madness will end with the most exciting two minutes in sports, The Kentucky Derby.

For detailed information on all the events of this year’s Derby Festival, check out THIS.

Tomorrow I will bring you my initial look at the early favorites to win the 135th Kentucky Derby.

For now though head over to the Louisville Bats site and get you some tickets for Saturday’s game. For as low as $20 you can avoid the massive crowds and battling for a spot to see the show AND get to watch Cincinnati Reds’ prospect Ben Jukich (1-0, 1.80) and the rest of the Bats take on Indianapolis.

You will also have easy access to clean restrooms and delicious concessions, hassle free! And as an added bonus, nearly every member of the Pinkie staff will be in attendance. So come on out, enjoy the game, enjoy the airshow, enjoy the fireworks, and flash them pinkies! WHY WOULD YOU NOT DO THIS?!?!?

what will a mint julip cost at the derby this year?

  2. Carl H says:

I believe they were $8 last year, however my sources tell me they will be $9 bones this year, and with tippin’, I’d go ahead and say $10 a pop. But you get to keep the saweet glass glasses, unless your name is B.J. and you get too hammered to remember them, or they are stolen by some weird Sabres fan from Buffalo (both true stories…)
