Wade calls Rondo’s flagrant foul a punk play
There was all kinds of bad blood on the court in Miami to open the NBA season last night. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo, Rajon Rondo and the entire Miami Heat team.
With that bad blood there was no lack of excitement. First there was Garnett giving Allen the cold shoulder when he attempted to greet him on the sidelines and then there was Rondo’s flagrant foul on Wade in the final seconds of the game that caused Wade to raise the ball over his head like he was going to throw it at him.
“I got my kids watching so I stopped myself but it was a punk play by him,” said Wade, who had a team-best 29 points in the win. “He clotheslined me.”
He also probably remembered that he has Gabrielle Union waiting at him for him after the game, who tweeted beforehand in cheering on her boyfriend, “LET’S GET IT!”. Uh Yump.
He then continued to say, “I’m here to play basketball, man. If you want to do something else, then go do something else. Boxing, this is not it. I was glad I was able to stop myself in that very moment and move on from it. We’ll see next time we play.”
Rondo has developed a lot of ill-will and this play will not stop that trend. I give Wade a lot of grief for flopping around all over the place, heck I still think he flopped his way around to the title in 2005, but Rondo needs to cool his jets and I give Wade some credit for resisting the temptation to counter-punch.
But, it still would have been a crazy scene had he reacted differently. Could have been a even more nuts way to start the 2012 NBA season.
