David Akers gets Vanderjacked in Week 1

It’s that time again where Straitpinkie salutes the big boots in the NFL each week. I seem to always have to remind people how important kickers are. In week 1 of the NFL season, 16 kickers scored double digits in Fantasy Football. On Monday great ESPN voice, Colin Cowherd, made a great point. After this weekend’s fiasco for the Penn State kicker Sam Fickens, he reminded his listeners, the biggest loss for the Nittany Lions was their all-conference kicker Anthony Fera to Texas. He also stated that the best move Lane Kiffin did as coach of USC after losing scholarships was to give 3 to the best punter, place kicker, and long snapper he could find! Special teams matter and the guy you can get you 3 points is huge!

The first kicker taken in the 2012 NFL draft Blair Walsh put on a show for the Vikings. He kicked 4 fgs with a long of 55 yds and added 2 extra points in a win for Minnesota. Yet, despite his efforts Straitpinkie thinks a record performance is worth the weekly Vanderjacked award! Last years <ahref=”http://www.straitpinkie.com/sports/pro-sports/2011-vanderjacked-of-the-year-award/”>Vanderjacked of Year Awardwinner David Akers started right where he left off, with a huge 63 yd kick in the Niners win over Green Bay. His day included 3 field goals, all over 40 yards, and 3 extra points as San Francisco started its year with a bang.
