The first leg was a draw at Bernabeu in a classic matchup as United played a marvelous game that ended in a 1-1 draw. The hype leading up to the game was certainly not unsubstantiated as the two teams played with class and flare. The scoring was opened by Danny Wellbeck in the 20th on great header from a corner. Real didn’t wait long to answer as Cristiano Ronaldo hit an amazing header in the 30th. The goal showcased his leaping ability, control, and pure athleticism as his team pulled even.

The game’s brightest point was the ManU defense. Phil Jones marking on Ronaldo was brilliant and truly forced Real to look elsewhere many times on the offensive side of pitch. The saving, yes pun intended, grace was the oft-maligned spaniard David De Gea. The net minder was all over the place in the match. His acrobatic and diving saves were enough to fill a highlight reel by themselves. He totaled 9 in the game and earned the man of the match in my mind.

The 2nd leg at Old Trafford is sure to be one for the ages. Both teams are in top form with Real Madrid earning wins over Barcelona in the last few weeks and Manchester United continuing their dominance in their domestic competitions. ManU’s greatness was showcased in Saturday’s beat down against Norwich City in a 4-0 victory. Real proved they still have a lot to offer with a 2-1 win over Barca on Saturday, and Ronaldo didn’t even enter the game until the 57th!

The game will air at 2:45 on Fox Sports Soccer (DirecTV 619) Tuesday, so get your DVR set up. Also Gus Johnson did a great job and brought plenty of excitement that he will continue to fine tune as he becomes more comfortable with the flow of the game. The result of the game will hinge on the ability of both teams to play excellent defense. It could certainly go either way. For United to move forward I believe they will have to score 2 goals, and if they don’t I expect Real to forge ahead. Should be really exciting and if you enjoy great sporting events then don’t miss this one!
