Balls and Strikes: The Fantasy Baseball Beat

Top 5 Free Agents to Add

1). Paul Maholm ATL SP 9 W 6 L 81 K 3.74 ERA 1.24 WHIP

Maholm went from a team with poor defense and no run support to a team that is good defensively and scores runs. He is on a run of six straight starts with only 1 earned run allowed. Grab him.

2). Carlos Gomez MIL OF .254 AVG 39 R 9 HR 28 RBI 19 SB

Gomez can do it all for you. Power, runs, stolen bases. As long as he keeps that average up he continues to warrant a spot on the bench.

3). Josh Ruteledge COL SS .381 AVG 10 R 3 HR 11 RBI 3 SB

I saw this guy play last season and this guy can straight up hit the ball. Even when Tulowitzki returns, he should find a spot somewhere in that infield.

4).  Matt Harvey NYM SP 1 W 1 L 18 K 1.59 ERA 1.15 WHIP

The word seems to be out that this Harvey kid is pretty good. Now I doubt he will continue to keep his ERA this low, but the strikeouts should continue.

5). Ryan Doumit MIN C .285 AVG 33 R 10 HR 49 R

Those are far better numbers than a lot of catchers currently starting in many fantasy lineups.

Buy Low: Hanley Ramirez LAD SS .246 AVG 54 R 16 HR 56 RBI 16 SB

Hanley looks to be a changed player in LA. With his sporadic production thus far you could get a top 30 player for a relatively cheap package.

Sell High: Hunter Pence SFG OF .271 AVG 59 R 17 HR 59 RBI 4 SB

You go from a hitter friendly lineup and park to the exact opposite. Time to get off the Pence train at the next stop!

Three Trends to Watch

1). Most frustrating fantasy player for me this season is Eric Hosmer. Every time he puts together 5-7 good ball games he regresses.  I’m hoping eventually he rewards my patience.

2).  A player worth looking into that could be available in many leagues is Jayson Werth. Depending on how his wrist healed he could be a solid contributor available in free agency. If you have a opening on the DL slot, he wouldn’t be a bad player to pick up and hold onto.

3). Locked into a playoff spot? It’s not a bad time to try to trade players to teams that are on the fringe some healthy players in exchange for some guys that could help you come playoff time. A few targets include Alex Rodriguez, Brandon Marrow, and Joey Votto to just name a few.
