Overnight/Morning Jake Peavy Rumors

With UK off for a few days, and the baseball Winter Meetings in full swing, I’m going to devote a post each morning to give an update of the latest Jake Peavy to the Cubs rumors.  In the case of these ongoing and interminable Peavy rumors, I’m going to invoke the cliché “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” as the reason why I think it’s going down eventually.  Hendry would not have pursued Peavy this long if he did not really want him.  He would not have restructured a dead deal multiple times, and Kevin Towers would not have actively been seeking a third team to involve.

Here’s what’s happening in the world o’ Peavy on Tuesday morning:

Sporting News-According to this, talks are moving along as of Monday night.  Both the San Diego Union-Tribune and Philadelphia Inqurier were cited in the article.  This is yet another rumor confirming that a third team must be involved to complete the deal (and possibly a fourth as well).  Kevin Towers also points to the end of the Winter Meetings as the drop dead date for a Peavy deal (posturing?).   Everything else in this article is stuff we have seen before, except for mentioning the Phillies as another team involved.  Apparently the Phils would receive Mark DeRosa for prospects, and the prospects would end up in San Diego (Here’s a link directly to that rumor).  It has to be a stressful time for a lot of Cubs, it seems like almost no one is safe from the rumor mill.

Chicago Sun-Times-Gordon Wittenmyer says in this piece that there is a lot of discussion that needs to happen for the deal to go down, but that his sources say it will eventually, but probably not until the weekend.  This rumor has Felix Pie headed to Baltimore for Garrett Olson.

Peavy deal up to Cubs-Nothing new here, but includes comments from Towers: “There’s a package there that satisfies us, will they (the Cubs end up doing it?  I don’t know.”

Pads consider keeping Peavy-Talks about the drop dead date that Towers sets at the end of the meetings.

Cubs eye Peavy, Abreu-I know Abreu is getting old, but I would really like him in right field.  He is as patient as Kosuke, and still an adequate defender.

Rockies interested in Marquis-Whether the Cubs pull the trigger on Peavy or not may depend on whether they can unload Jason Marquis.  By the way, I know Coors Field is not what it used to be, but what would Marquis numbers be if he went to Colorado?  7-16 6.75 ERA?  4-25 12.39 ERA?
