Marinating on College Football’s Opening Weekend

The first weekend of college football has come and gone, leaving us with the anticipation for more, just like a game of the ‘Just the tip.’ Here are a few casual thoughts from the few brain cells I have left:
It is almost impressive how much Mike Locksley has ran New Mexico into the toilet.
While New Mexico was never a national power, they were a respectable team in the Mountain West under Rocky Long just a few years back, going to three bowls between ’04 and ’07. Locksley is only in his second year, but is making the type of scene that could make Isaiah Thomas blush. Last year, he trumped his sterling 1-11 record with a sexual harrasment lawsuit and some fisticuffs with an assistant coach. What did he do during this season’s opening weekend as an encore? How about get beat down 73-0 by Oregon in Eugene.
Is the honeymoon period already over for Turner Gil at Kansas?
After a 6-3 defeat at the hands of mighty North Dakota State, Jayhawk fans are already clamoring for basketball season. Somewhere out there, Mark Mangino is smiling while burying his face in a can of Crisco. Keep in mind that the 1-AA FCS Bison from ND State were 2-9 last year. All we heard about coming into the season was how Gil was cleaning up the Kansas program, but perhaps he needs to bring some of the swearing and ‘mistreatment’ of players back to Lawrence.
Arkansas State head coach: “Cam Newton is the player I have ever seen live.”
Does Steve Roberts not get out much, or is the Auburn QB the real deal? Newton had a hand in five touchdowns while running for 171 and throwing for 186 in the Tigers 52-26 romp over the Indians Red Wolves. Newton is a JUCO transfer who actually started his career at Florida, but is now lining up behind center on the Plains. If he is the type of player that the Arky State coach thinks he is, it could be a good year for some “War Damn Eagle.”
