March Madness means Spring Football!

lindley johnson1 March Madness means Spring Football!

Spring Football is around the corner and it’s a great time for teams to test new schemes, move players around and for younger players to show they need serious consideration when fall camp arrives.  UK recently announced several players will make position changes.  First, Dakota Tyler will move from Running Back to Safety, Moncell Allen will move from Tailback to Fullback and Matt Lentz will move from Strong Safety to Strong Side Linebacker.

Personally, I’m a fan of each of these moves and think UK should consider a few more.  Tyler will add more speed to the Secondary which is never a bad thing.  “The Turtle” (Allen) can block better than most realize as UK used him as the Fullback in goal line situations last year.  Like Joker said yesterday, if you don’t think Allen can block, just ask UK’s Linebackers.  I’m most excited about Matt Lentz moving to Linebacker.  Lentz played Quarterback in High School and is very “football” smart.  He has good speed and is a proven tackler.  I look for him to really blossom in his new position.  There are some rumors UK may move some Defensive Lineman to the Offensive side of the ball, but nothing has been announced.

Also, Spring Football is a great time to host recruits.  All schools will bring in recruits for practice and invite them to attend their spring game.  It’s important to recruits becuase they witness how the coaches interact with players and get a chance to chat with with players and coaches.  There are couple of recruiting links below for fans to check out.

UK also held Pro Day yesterday for their Seniors and Juniors.  By most reports all of the Seniors did really well and some of the Juniors impressed the Scouts.  The main difference between UK’s Pro Day and NFL Combine are the way times are calculated.  The NFL combine clocks speeds by a computer while on campus the Scouts use stop watches.  It’s not a huge difference, but that’s why they run multiple times.
