Krags Adds Three to Coaching Staff; Nelson Resigns

By: Miller | January 6th, 2009 | Category: Cards - Sports

Coach Krags announced late Monday evening the addition of three coaches to his staff and also announced the resignation of Special Teams Coordinator Mark Nelson. In this articular, we will focus on the additions. The most noteworthy addition is defensive backs coach Larry Slade, who coached DBs at Tennessee for the past ten years. Last year at UT, despite posting a record of 5-7, his passing defense ranked fourth nationally. He also has strong recruiting ties in the southeast, which has been fertile ground for the Cardinals recently.  Slade coached with Krags while both were at Texas A&M in the mid 90s.

Another defensive addition is Brent Guy, former Utah State head coach. While his stint as head coach for the Aggies did not go well (to be fair, no one outside of John L. Smith has done well there), he has produced many fine defenses as a Defensive Coordinator, most notably at Arizona State. In 2002, his defense produced 40 turnovers, 123 tackles for loss, and 52 sacks. He will serve as linebackers coach at Louisville, as former linebackers coach Bill Miller is now the Defensive Coordinator.

The final addition comes on the offensive side of the ball as Krags added Jay Johnson to the offensive staff. Johnson was actually at Louisville this past year as an administrative assistant. For those who are wondering exactly what an administrative assistant does, I will give you the short answer, I don’t know. What’s the long answer you might ask? Well, it’s I have no f’n clue, but I digress. Johnson was Offensive Coordinator at Southern Mississippi for three seasons and during those years produced a top 25 rushing attack. We are not sure which position he will hold at Louisville, but it appears he could be Offensive Coordinator in waiting if things do not work out for Jeff Brohm or he takes another job.

These are fine additions to the Louisville coaching staff and I believe makes a statement as to what Krags’ peers think of him. Last year, it was Ron English, sought after by many schools, who jumped on board with Krags and continued to speak highly of Krags after leaving recently. Now, with these additions, I believe its time for fans to at least recognize if his peers believe in Krags, then perhaps he is not the bumbling idiot he is made out to be by some people.
