Lane Kiffin apparently has no qualms about making enemies out of every single one of his SEC opponents.  Kiffin was engaged in a bitter recruiting battle with Steve Spurrier and South Carolina over star wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey when he delivered this gem according to ESPN’s Chris Low:

According to Jeffrey and Wilson, Kiffin told Jeffrey that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina.

Jeffrey was doing his best to stay awake at that point, but that comment from Kiffin woke him up. He clearly hasn’t forgotten it, either.

“He said it, but it’s not worth talking about,” Jeffrey said.

The approach didn’t work, because Jeffrey ended up signing with the Gamecocks, and can now look forward to pumping gas once his eligibility is up.

Jeffrey, at that point, was clearly leaning toward heading to Columbia, and out of desperation, Kiffin tried lobbing insults at the kid who hails from nearby St. Matthews, South Carolina.   Going after a kid’s home state school is a pathetic approach, and it seems like Kiffin has decided that if a kid is not coming to Tennessee, he should at least hate Tennessee.

If Kiffin lasts as a coach without Pete Carroll to protect him, I’ll be surprised, but however short or long his tenure ends up being, he’ll be remembered, even if it is only for his wife:
