College Football Week 5: On Paper, Upset Potential, Don’t Bother

On Paper
#25 Baylor vs. #9 West Virginia
Saturday at 12pm on FX
The Mountaineers were a preseason pick by many to walk in to the Big12 and take the championship. Well, their journey starts this Saturday against a Baylor Bear team that is looking to make some waves. Neither team has played an opponent to brag about, but both teams are 3-0. Both teams have put up big numbers and this is more than likely going to be a shootout. The Bears are led by RGIII replacement, Nick Florence, who has put up some classy numbers against sub-par defenses. Florence has thrown for over 1000 yds and 11 tds as his team has scored over 51 pts a game. The ‘Neers bring to the table one of the nations top QB’s and early season Heisman candidates in Geno Smith. Smith has been deadly accurate with a completion percentage of 80 inlcuding 12 TDS against 0 interceptions. West Virginia had a rough start last week against Maryland but they should be refocused and ready to go. This is going to be shoot-out and neither defense will see a more explosive offense this season. I just see Florence and the Bears making that one mistake down the stretch that will cost them the game.

Upset Potential
#18 Oregon State vs. Arizona
Saturday at 10pm on Pac12 Network
These teams are both at a fork in the road. The Wildcats laid an egg against Oregon last week and the Beavers went in to Pasadena and beat Jim Mora’s Bruins. This game could propel Oregon State into a contender for the Pac12 title. Where is Arizona and RichRod lose this game their season could been in a downward spiral they may not come back from with Stanford, UW, and USC the next three on their schedule. This is the kind of game that screams trap for Oregon State, coming off a big win and possibly looking past a team that just got ransacked by one of their rivals. If Arizona doesn’t show up, expect the team to spend a few extra hours in practice this week.
