Bellarmine Knights, under Coach Davenport, defeated Illinois-Springfield 79-57 on Sunday at Knights Hall to progress in the GLVC Tourney.
The teams were in a tight game until the 8:14 minute when Bellarmine finally took the lead for good. The Knights pushed the lead to 10 by half with a last second 3 from Ryan Burton. The 2nd Half was all Bellarmine, as Illinois-Springfield never was closer than 11 and the lead ballooned to 22 before the final buzzer. Chris Dowe led the team with 21 pts and 8 rebounds. Season leading scorer Vance Hall was held to just 3-8 shooting and 7 pts but he did lead the team with 6 assists.
Bellarmine shot just over 50% from the field and held their opponents to only 39%, including just 29% in the 2nd Half. This team will have to continue hitting shots and playing stifling defense if they want to traverse through the difficult GLVC. The #15 ranked Knights now move on to the Quarter Finals in Evansville. On Thursday at 1, they will face a tough Maryville team that beat Bellarmine early in the year by 4 in St. Louis.
