You may ask yourself “What award could possibly be named after Chris Rix?”. No, it’s not for consistently mediocre QB’s, or for guys who seemed to lose their job 292 times but somehow regained it every time. You see, we here at straitpinkie are all about honoring unique talent. In this case the unique talent is the ability to seem like you have played a college sport for 7-10 years and make fans say “oh my god, he’s still in college?!?!”.
The key to winning this award is to gain playing time very early in your college career, and play for consecutive years for a high profile team. Your case can be helped by a few things: 1) redshirt year due to injury 2) playing point guard at Duke 3) being particularly annoying/obnoxious 4) being white (note that 2, 3, and 4 usually coincide).
There have been countless Chris Rix’s throughout my time watching college sports, and we need a place to honor them (YES WE CAN) and make fun of them (YES WE CAN), and straitpinkie is that place (YES WE CAN)
. The award was originally to be named after Brian Cardinal, but I didn’t want people to think this was an award for garbage basketball players who managed to get an absurd contract from an unbelievably dumb organization. With that said, the namesake of the award is up for consideration, and if a better namesake shows himself, he will be honored.
I’m going to start things off by naming a few of the charter recipients, and open things up for nominations. Also, please note that all UK players are ignored, because I don’t think a fan has proper perspective to evaluate membership of players in his/her team.
Chris Rix
Brian Cardinal
Chris Duhon
Walter Hodge
Steve Wojciechowski
Gerry McNamara
Chris Leak
Ronald Steele

Bobby Frasor
Juan Palacios
Sasha Kaun

Aaron Miles
Reggie Ball
Ron Dayne
Ron Pawlus

I believe I have your namesake – DREW NEITZEL. He had to have played at MSU for a good 21 consecutive seasons. I hear Tom Izzo is still trying to convince the NCAA for another year of eligibility for him.
And along with RIx, wasn’t Chris Weinke legitimately like 27 when he left FSU?
I’ll keep thinking tomorrow. . .
Even though he is a UK player I’d like to nominate my boy Wayne Turner. He played in the most college basketball games ever so he’s gotta belong by default no? This news is about a month old, but the East Kentucky Miners have signed Wayne for the 08-09 season.

Kansas City- You have Greg Paulus, but how about former Notre Dame QB Ron Paulus. He was the next big ND QB for at least 5-6 seasons. And let’s not forget Ron Dayne. It is easy to break the all time rushing mark when you are in college longer than Tommy Boy.
Julius Hodge from NC State…that kid had to have been in school for at least 7 years.
Ron Pawlus and Ron Dayne, done and done.
I’m a Gator fan, and I can’t beleive Walter Hodge is still there.
How about these players:
Dicky Lyons Jr., Kentucky,
Raymar Morgan, just a JR now, Michigan St.
Robert Dozier, Memphis,
Curtis Painter, Purdue
Hasheem Thabeet, Uconn
Not as big a name but Donny Nickey played at Ohio State for like 9 years.
Also Matt Grothe
Reggie Ball
Good call on Reggie Ball. I never would have thought of him on my own, but he is perfect.
Aaron Miles from KU, Carl Krauser from Pitt.
I am a Penn State fan and I am pretty sure that Jeff Smoker played quarterback for MSU in every game between the two schools during the 90′s and he also fits multiple aspects of the above criteria.
Old school UM. Rusty Mederis. Had at least 4 knee surgeries. At the U in the 90′s for at least 7 years. Had to be.
Any left handed guard at Arizona named Stoudamire. There’s been at least one for the past 32 years.
Evan Eschmeier from Northwestern. Dude had to have spent about a baker’s dozen years in the Big Ten
weinke has got to be a top on any list about being in college for too long. He retired form the nfl after like 4 seasons. mostly because he was already 40
Bobby Newcombe – Nebraska WR/RB/QB/PR/KR
Probably played in 45 games in his college career.
Bobby Newcombe might be my favorite so far, it seems like he was a starter at a different position every year he was there.
Good call on Evan Eschmeier who actually received 2 medical redshirts. My buddy and I developed this “Chris Rix award” long ago, only we know it as the “Preston Shumpert” award who played 13 seasons for Syracuse. Also in the hall of fame would be Jess Settles of Iowa who received more redshirts than any player in NCAA history (according to me). Carl Krauser is also in the hall of fame for this as I think he was actually 26 years old when he graduate (seriously). And if you’re talking Duke, Shane Battier seemingly played more seasons than any of the guards you name (throw in plugs by Dickie V to make it seem like a decade).
And you may not name Kentucky players, but Tubby Smith’s kids seemed like they sucked for at least 7 years in Lexington, especially fugly Saul.
Currently Ian Johnson has been the running back at Boise for at least 7 straight seasons.
Check out Jess Settles from The University of Iowa
The award might have to be re-named for him
Ohio State has had a tailback named Maurice Wells for the past decade and a half.
I wish Carl Krauser was still around…. It wouldn’t surprise me if Drew Tate was still QB’ing at Iowa………
I second the Jess Settles nomination, he was granted not one, but TWO years of additional eligibility under the injury hardship waiver and ended up playing basketball for Iowa for 6 seasons! The sad thing was he was an amazing player before the back injuries (which led to the two redshirt years) set him back…
Another Iowa-centric nomination might be Luke Recker (who played for three DI teams: Indiana, Arizona, and Iowa)…
Jess Settles (two medical redshirts=almost automatic) and Luke Recker (two transfers=almost automatic) are definite honorees.
I want to nominate Tyler Hansbrough…it seems as if he has been at UNC forever.
Quinton Thomas at UNC
Paul Davis at michigan state
mustafa shakur at arizona
Tennessee’s had a punter named Colquitt for roughly 14 years. I nominate him.
What about Jason White it seemed every year he was there blowing the big games away
Got to be every Tennesse QB and Punter. Hasn’t a Clausen and Colquitt been there since the early 90s?
Drew Lavender at Oklahoma/Xavier
Danny Farmer, WR UCLA,
Dustin Colquitt, PK/P Tennessee
Carlos Huerta, PK Miami
Gordon Ely-Kelso, P/PK Georgia
Cameron Dollar – G UCLA Basketball
gotta have Acie Earl from Iowa on there. he played at least 13 years of big ten basketball
Evan Eschmeyer. I swear he played at Northwestern my entire childhood. And just to continue the spirit he went back to Northwestern to pursue a graduate degree. Good call on Wojo since he really hasn’t left and is now teaching a new crop of destined to be NBA-flop Dukies that are more or less clones of Wojo himself. 90s college basketball is filled with Chris Rix award winners.
josh shipp G/F UCLA
i’m pretty sure he was college teammates with baron davis
Lee Suggs was at V Tech from when I was 9 until i graduated high school
Wow, when I first saw this the first thing that came to mind was Jess Settles!
I’d also have to say the Paulus has to be on the list for sure.
Another sleeper here is Ian Johnson from Boise State. He proposed to his girlfriend I believe right after the new millenium, I remember him talking about being worried about his computer…
Chad Henne?
What about Mike Hart?
I’m pretty sure the wide receiver combination making colt mccoy (sloth from goonies) so good, Quan Cosby and Jordan Shipley were at Texas when they joined the Big XII
Even though he just came into the spotlight this year, but Jordan Shiply.
Being from Texas, it seems like he’s been there a LONG time (and thank god because he is real good). He has been there 5 years, and is widely expected to appeal for and receive a 6th year of eligibility (he redshirted, then medical redshirted TWO years because of hamstrings).
Kyle Wright
Erik Ainge
Wyatt Sexton?
Drew Weatherford, is still there
Roy Hibbert
Matt Walsh
Gotta go with Donovan McNabb – and add to that, for longterm haters of the gridiron Orange(men) Mr. Marvin Graves. Basically from 1987 until 1998, one of these two was playing QB for the Orange(men).
The original member, and namesake of this award, should be Travis Ford. He played against Duke when Laettner went perfect from the field in the Regional Semifinal with Feldhaus, Gimel Martinez, and Jamal Mashburn. He played at UK for at least 16 years and looked older than my father.
a.j. price at uconn
Don’t forget Brock Berlin. He played QB for two seasons at Florida with Rex Grossman and then sat out the 2002 season so he could transfer to Miami and be the starter there for two years.
A rare example of a player who played games in at least part of six seasons was QB Charlie Batch at Eastern Michigan University. Then immediately after college he became the starter for the Detroit Lions, where he got benched or injured 2 or 3 times every year for four seasons. I’m 26 years old and I’ve been watching this guy play for over half my life.
I think that this is awesome. I am a huge Seminole fan and the best day was when that guy left.
How about Chad Henney. He seemed to be at Michigan forever and was pretty disapointing also.
How can you leave out Jason White? The guy was at OU for 6 years, thanks to two medical redshirts, one for each knee.
scoonie penn and demarcus nelson.
Brock Berlin FTW!
John Navarre (Michigan QB), Tyquan Dean (Louisville hoops)
you forgot the granddaddy of them all….. CHEROKEE PARKS
