Updates on Tobias Harris, Josh Selby and a few random Monday notes

By: Guy | August 9th, 2009 | Category: Cats

Tobias Harris and Josh Selby are two players that have a lot in common.

Both have exploded on the recruiting scene in the past month, Harris for his stellar play and Selby for his highly public decommitment from Bruce Pearl and the Tennessee Volunteers.

Both have drawn serious interest from our two local teams, UK and UofL. They also have common interest in other schools like UConn, Florida.

The two are also teammates in the Nike World Games, playing for Team USA East. The two are showing why they are so highly regarded and sought after. Their team just defeated Brazil with big contributions from both. Selby put up 30 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in an 89-74 win. Harris scored 14 points in spite of a battle with foul trouble.

Adam Zagoria also just posted an article with some news on both regarding their recruitment.

There has been some interweb chatter that Tobias Harris has committed to Georgia Tech, which would continue the logic defying trend of Paul Hewitt landing big time players, in spite of getting very little out of them once they arrive on campus. Zagoria spoke with Torrel Harris, Tobias’ father, and discovered that this is a fabrication and that a commitment is not anywhere near imminent.

Zagoria reports that Selby will visit UConn this week and “is being courted by Kentucky, Louisville, and UConn”.

Now for the randomness:

-If you have been desperately awaiting the start of football season like me, you likely tuned in for the NFL’s Hall of Fame game between the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills. Unsurprisingly, the game was very boring, but at least we got to see a couple former Wildcats on the field.

Rafael Little, who has been making a strong case for a roster spot in Tennessee, saw the field late, carrying the ball 3 times for -2 yards. Not exactly eye popping numbers but it’s good to see him on the field regardless. Stevie Johnson also ran some routes for Buffalo, but Trent Edwards was too busy trying to make sure he didn’t piss off Terrell Owens by not throwing it to him to throw it to anyone else. Johnson failed to make a catch, something that was a rarity while he played for the ‘Cats.

Can you believe we’re approaching the two year anniversary of that play?

-Some not so good news on UK football. Rich Brooks said that running back Alphonso Smith has aggravated his troublesome foot and will be wearing a boot for a few days. This is a setback that UK cannot afford. Smith, especially with Derrick Locke’s uncertain status after knee surgery, is going to be called on to be the man in the backfield. Hopefully he can get healthy quickly and get back on the practice field.

-Finally, if you’ve been feverishly checking the Pinkie for my latest post (please, allow me to continue thinking there’s someone out there who is), you will have noticed I have been MIA since Thursday. The reason is that I and my wallet just survived a 3 day trip to Las Vegas. The craziness is over so I am back.

While I was gone, I just now saw the John Wall nasty crossover and subsequent dunk on Jerry Stackhouse that made the rounds this weekend. In case you haven’t seen it…

The hype surrounding John Wall is seriously reaching a level that I don’t know if I’ve ever seen for a new UK players. Not only is he a YouTube legend without playing a game, but reports of his interactions with fans and teammates in Lexington have been nothing but glowing.

I spent a lot of time this weekend preaching to my college buddies about Wall, only one of whom had even heard of him, which was appalling to me. Wall is about 3 months from being introduced to the world and I cannot wait.

  2. Two more quick notes from the article about the Nike World Games that I failed to point out. The first is on CJ Leslie, who said there are two schools that are ahead of the pack at this point: “North Carolina stands out because they just won a national championship,” said Leslie. “Kentucky stands out because it is a great program and my former point guard (John Wall) is there.” It would really be tremendous if UK could grab Leslie. To take the best recruit in North Carolina away from the Heels and Dukies would be amazing.
The second is on Tobias Harris, who confirmed that he had a good visit to UK and that UK is “firmly on his list”. This is good news and it sounds like UK will make the cut when he narrows his list later this month.
