Well, it’s 6 games into the 2009-2010 season, and already, no one is going to be able to call the Kentucky Wildcats ‘untested’. I think most people expected an undefeated record at this point with lots of John Wall highlights, but I don’t think anyone expected so many plays in clutch situations to be on the mixtapes.
UK didn’t fall as far behind as they did against Miami of Ohio, but John Wall, Patrick Patterson and the ‘Cats needed a late game comeback and overtime to take down Stanford and head back to Lexington to celebrate Turkey Day with an unblemished record.
OK, it’s 1:30 am and I’m in Cincinnati without computer Internet access posting from my iPhone, so in honor of the site of the Cancun Challenge, I’m going to do the rest of this recap quick and dirty: in bullet point stream of conciousness mode:
-Really, what is there that’s left to be said about John Wall? We knew we were getting a once in a generation type athlete at the point guard position. We didn’t know (or at least I didn’t) that were getting a once in a generation type athlete that also happens to be a crunch time killer.
The game tying free throws he made with 2.4 seconds left didn’t even dare hit the rim they were so pure. He also knocked down a tying J with just under 30 seconds left and put an exclamation point on the win with a buzzer beating slam.
He finished with 26 points 5 assists and 4 rebounds, moving closer to household name status.
-DeMarcus Cousins lived up to his enigmatic reputation. He made some phenomenal offensive plays, but also some phenomenally bone headed decisions, culminating in an intentionally missed free throw and disqualification due to his 5th foul.
John Calipari absolutely flipped his lid at Cousins while he sat dejected on the bench.
I think the recovery process will be much smoother since the Cats won, but there will be serious conversations between the two in coming days.
-Landry Fields is a really good player, but I REALLY don’t like him. I don’t know if it was his unathletic look, the fact that he just kept getting calls, or the fact that UK had no answer for him, but he really bothered me.
Nick correctly pointed out his versatility in his preview, and he lived up to it. He scored inside, from midrange, and on the offensive boards. Pretty much the only thing he didn’t do was hit the outside shot (0-7 from three).
UK tried to guard him with Darius Miller, Patrick Patterson, Ramon Harris, and even John Wall, but it didn’t matter all that much. UK is going to face multi-dimensional players all season, so they must improve, but Fields is going to have a big year.
-With John Wall’s emergence, Eric Bledsoe is having some trouble finding his way. When he’s hitting the outside shot, he’s going to get his points, but this is an adjustment period for him. He’s used to always having the ball, but Wall is so good that he just has to dominate the ball. It is worth noting though that Bledsoe hit the overtime bomb that gave UK a two possession lead.
-Darnell Dodson unceremoniously returned to the rotation tonight, playing a few quiet minutes. His outside shooting is a must for this team, because we all saw how stagnant the offense got tonight when the opponent didn’t have to worry about the outside shot.
-The Cats are now 6-0 on the season and now have 1,994 wins in program history. Their six game win streak is the longest to start a season since 2003-2004. They will look to make it 7 on Monday against UNC-Asheville in Freedom Hall.
I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving tomorrow. Eat a bunch and enjoy your family and football. I’ll have a look at UK’s senior football class tomorrow afternoon.

Well, at 34 seconds and the ball in Stanford’s hands for free throws, i could not watch any longer. Turned of tv, told husband i guess we needed a reality moment
and was shocked that we won, I MISSED it , what little faith i had in my boys.
With John Wall on the floor, it’s probably never a good idea to turn off a ‘Cats game.
