Rivals rates 2009 classes: UK new #1, UofL 14th

Yesterday Rivals.com announced their latest rankings of the best college basketball recruiting classes in 2009. Thanks to an absolutely unreal first 37 or so days on the job from one John Calipari (seriously, this first month-plus could not have gone any better), UK now sports the top recruiting class in the nation with 4 top 40 high school seniors (#2 DeMarcus Cousins, #22 Daniel Orton, #23 Eric Bledsoe, and #40 Jon Hood) and one of the best JUCO prospects around in Darnell Dodson. Rivals had this to say about Calipari’s haul:

Three five-star signees catapult John Calipari’s first Kentucky recruiting class to the top of the 2009 team recruiting rankings. Bledsoe, who is the latest addition, fills a major void at the point guard position. Cousins and Orton are both skilled post players who bring a physical presence to the court. Hood is a slashing scorer from the Bluegrass State, and Dodson is one of the most talented junior college prospects in the country.

Oh yeah, UK still could add the top player in Rivals rankings, John Wall, to a class that is already number 1.

Rick Pitino’s UofL class is solid as well, checking in at number 14 with 4 quality signees (#36 Peyton Siva, #39 Rakeem Buckles, Mike Marra, and the awesomely named Stephan Van Treese):

Rick Pitino and his staff filled several needs. Buckles is one of the most intriguing players in the class because of his size, raw ability and versatility at the power forward position. Siva is a scoring point guard, similar to players the Cardinals have relied on in the past. Marra is an athletic wing with great range on his jumper. Van Treese is a bouncy forward that can run the floor.
