John Wall to meet with Roy Williams today

By: Guy | April 9th, 2009 | Category: Cats

The recruiting dead period comes to a close today at noon, so if you thought that John Calipari’s first week as UK coach was crazy in terms of recruiting activity, just wait for it.

The recruiting world is absolutely abuzz Kentucky related news. Our good friend John Clay had a couple great posts yesterday, including one that mapped out UK’s impact on the Rivals rankings:

Rank Player Height Hometown Status
1. John Wall 6-4 Raleigh, NC Now lists UK with several others
2. DeMarcus Cousins 6-9 Mobile, AL Committed to UK
3. Xavier Henry 6-6 Oklahoma City, OK Considering UK and Kansas
4. Derrick Favors 6-9 Atlanta, GA Committed to Georgia Tech
5. Jordan Hamilton 6-7 Los Angeles, CA Signed with Texas
6. John Henson 6-10 Tampa, FL Signed with North Carolina
7. Kenny Boynton 6-2 Plantation, FL Signed with Florida
8. Avery Bradley 6-3 Henderson, NV Signed with Texas
9. Lance Stephenson 6-6 Brooklyn, NY Considering Kansas, St. John’s, others
10. Renardo Sidney 6-10 Los Angeles, CA Committed to USC
22. Daniel Orton 6-10 Oklahoma City, OK Signed with UK
32. Jon Hood 6-6 Madisonville, KY Signed with UK
47. Nolan Dennis 6-5 N. Richland Hills, TX Signed with Memphis

Atop that list, and atop the list of pretty much every UK fan, is point guard John Wall. In order for UK to make the leap from NIT also-ran to NCAA Tournament player like we all want, UK needs an elite point guard, and it doesn’t get more elite than John Wall. The news this morning is that John Wall and North Carolina coach Roy Williams are reportedly meeting today one the dead period ends.

No one is really sure where the meeting will take place, because Wall is playing in the Nike Hoops Summit this weekend, but UNC has apparently waltzed into the Wall sweepstakes, much to the chagrin of UK and Duke fans (hey, we have something in common after all!!). UNC fans are already confident they can snag him, but will Ole Roy be able to overcome the fact that he ignored Wall for the better part of his senior year?

In other news, it’s pretty much consensus that a commitment from Nolan Dennis is forthcoming, likely this weekend when he’s in the Bluegrass. Jody Demling talked with Nolan’s mother, and Dennis seems to have a sort of man crush on John Calipari, joining pretty much the entire male UK fan base in that regard:

He loves coach (John) Calipari,” she said. “Definitely, he was the main reason he was going (to Memphis). He idolizes him. (Calipari) will make him such a better player.”

  1. “…but will Ole Roy be able to overcome the fact that he ignored Wall for the better part of his senior year?”

Not a fact. On the contrary, RW been in contact for quite some time–seriously.

As inferred in your treatise above, RW prefers to keep his biz on the down low. It took some serious sniping to get this data.

  2. gm is correct. Roy has stayed in contact since Wall is in his backyard. Also, another telling point is Wall’s desire to stay close to home to be near his mother.

  3. Explain then UNC’s complete disappearance from any of John Wall’s list of potential schools. UNC is his favorite team and they’re in his backyard, why would he omit them from his college choices unless he was not being recruited?

He doesn’t list UNC because they haven’t offered.

  5. [...] Wall-Wall will be attending the Hoop Summit, and because of that, the meeting reported to have taken place between UNC coach Roy Williams and Wall looks to have been a phone [...]

  6. Wall’s “handler” doesn’t care much for the UNC coaching staff. That’s probably why everything is so hush-hush. I think it’s all pretty obvious. Wall could stay at home and play for NCSU or Dook and would be a shoe-in as the starting point guard. Same goes for Memphis, Baylor or Kentucky. So why hasn’t he committed? I say he’s waiting on Lawson’s decision to turn pro. To me, that’s the only explanation that makes sense.

  7. Wall is waiting on Lawson’s decision. Source on the team says. Either way, well have Wall or Lawson running the point next year! Back to Back Champs???

  8. John Wall is not what UNC wants on their team. Wall is a thug and represents everything UNC is not. Roy usually has been pretty good about choosing classy, good kids and Wall is just not that.
