nickev, avert your eyes, we have news about Billy Gillispie.
I had just assumed that Billy Gillispie would be taking a year off from coaching while prowling around Lexington and maybe even crashing a game or two at Rupp. However, there are rumors flying around that Billy G may land back in Texas after all with Texas Pan American. On the face of things, it seems like a great fit for both sides, but let’s hope UTPA does not give Mitch Barnhart or Lee Todd a call for a reference:
Apparently, Billy Gillispie is rumored to be in the running for the head coaching position at Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas.
Texas-Pan American is a member of the Great West Conference and is coming off a 10-17 season. Texas-Pan American isn’t know for there basketball tradition but Gillespie has previous success in turning programs around (i.e. In his three seasons at Texas A&M the team achieved three consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history.)
Texas-Pan American’s program is currently under an internal investigation for possible NCAA violations. So far, 28 coaches have applied for the position.
This sounds like a terrific fit for Gillispie to get back on his feet. He would be able to return to the comfortable, “home” setting of Texas, where he undoubtedly has many connections. UT-Pan American would also put Gillispie out of the spotlight so that he can focus on basketball. If he is able to turn the program around, he will then get an opportunity at a higher profile school.

Larry Vaught states that Gillispie is close to settling the buyout for $3 million AND UK is buying his house from him. LINK HERE.
I hope he gets the position, rebuilds, and prospers. UK did a terrible thing by releasing him. Billy G deserves better and another change. He will do just fine in Texas and any place else he is hired at. UK should buy his house, and pay him more because they are the ones who mistreated him. Billy was on the verge of making UK a powerhouse but he never got the chance.
Billy Gillispie deserves better?? OMFG…OMFG. UK deserved better. He couldnt coach a damn high school team!! You blame UK for his failure? LMFAO. Now Ive seen it all. UK hadnt been out of the NCAA tourney in 18 years…Hmm.. Losses to VMI…Gardner Webb..Hell he went back to Texas with his tail tucked between his legs after the Gardner Webb loss.. LMFAO UK should buy his house? Why? He shouldnt have bought such an expencive house for one man to live in. UK mistreaded Billy the Turd? LMAO. What planet are you from dude? He set all kinds of BAD RECORDS in 2 years at UK. He was going to make UK a power house? OMG!! Give him 2 more years and UK would be a division 2 school! You can have the drunk bastard. He is no coach ../and you sir.. Know nothing about basketball if you think BCG is a good coach.. Oh yea. When he went back running to Texas? They told him they didnt want him or anyone who lost to Gardner Webb. So us FANS at UK say this to you you blind FOOL! Bite our BIG BLUE ASSES!! GO CATS!
Pssst… UK isnt buying Gillispies (A.K.A. Billy the Turd) house. He is selling it himself. And dont count on UK paying him 3 mill. Dumbass didnt sign a contract and the one he claims he signed was year to year and why would they him after he was already paid for his 2 years of destruction at UK? Sound to me as if he has been PAID IN FULL!! He should pay UK for finishing off what Tubby Smith started. The tarnishing and destruction of KENTUCKY BASKETBALL! GO CATS!!
You want to see a powerhouse? Sit back and watch coach Cal do what NIT Billy could only dream about… Building UK back to where it used to be and where it BELONGS!! Back on top and firing up the HATERS EVERYWHERE!! You gotta love the HATERS!! GO CATS!!!
[...] is also something that figures to be a black mark for Billy Gillispie in the future as he looks for another job. His tenure at UK has already raised flags about his coaching style and a lawsuit could potentially [...]
HA! Cracks me up how RossKY and other KenSUCKy fans are so excited about Coach Cal… Just like they were about Billy. You are all a bunch of idiots who think you know about basketball because it is your birthright or something given you to by Adolph Hit–Rupp back in the day. Good luck KenSUCKy, Lord knows you’re gonna need it….
Rupp – LEGEND
Hall – Great Coach
Sutton – disaster
Pitino – LEGEND
Smith – Great Coach
Gillispie – disaster
Calipari – LEGEND (when all is said and done)
Caplipari has already put together the best recruiting class ever. i agree he will be a legend and will bring kentucky back to the top!
Not everybody in this state was behind Billy G when he arrived here over 2 years ago myself I wanted Cal I told my friends and family the day Billy came here to Lexington and announced he was going to be the coach I told them he would be gone 2 to 3 years and I was right when we fired him again I was praying for coach cal because I like the way he coaches and interactes with the people in the community Billy G is a good coach but not one to coach at an elight program like Kentucky he bit off more than he could chew when he came here were basketball is a religion.
Billy G was a terrible mistake. From day one he was in way over his head and I think he knew it. Had few skills in coaching…………example, his practice of having a two hour scrimmage before every game (to get the team ready to compete!) destroyed the legs of UK’s best players and resulted in losses due to dead legs and exhaustion. NO other coach in Div I has such practices. Rediculous, a high school stunt. His public relations was straight from the Texas hill country. He was rude, uncouth, and chauvanistic. Remember his insults to ESPN women, Erin? He was just as bad locally with the public and local media. His recruiting reputation was a scam. His recruits never panned out and most of them didn’t come after Cal came because they werent talented enough. Now we are competing with the elite Div I programs for the best talent and getting our share. Billy G’s personal life was in shambles when he arrived and only went downhill after that. A bad hire and our AD should have done a better job vetted Billy
G before hiring him. UK is lucky to have Calipari who is a top coaching, recruiting talent and understands the privilege of coaching at the number one bb program in the US. EX. 24,000 fans attended Gameday and another 24,000 attended the game later the same day.
A final note: After Jode Meeks set the scoring record with a 54 point game at Tn. Gillespie responded by benching Meeks and limiting his minutes the rest of the season. As a result, Meeks went to the NBA. If Meeks had returned with Cal’s team this year, UK would be unbeatable.
