Congratulations to Coach Jeff Walz and the Louisville Lady Cardinals. They overcame a 14-point deficit and defeated the one-seed, Courtney Paris-led Oklahoma 61-59 to advance and play for the school’s first ever National Championship.
Angel McCoughtry was held without a field goal for the entire first half and first few minutes of the second half. Then, she took over. Eighteen points and 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocks later, the Lady Cards were celebrating another milestone in this, already the program’s most successful season ever.
Courtney Paris, the only collegiate player ever (man or woman) to tally 2,500+ points and 2,000+ boards, saw her stellar career come to an end. Paris stuck around afterwards to give a quick interview, in which she stated that she didn’t have $64,000 on her at the moment, but she would make good on her promise to pay the University back in full for her scholarship if she didn’t lead them to the Championship. Paris had 14 points and 16 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough.
Louisville will face the winner of Stanford and unbeaten Connecticut on Tuesday night.
