Louisville came into Morgantown and put up a heck of a fight, but could not find the endzone and lost 17-9. Redshirt freshman running back Darius Ashley officially arrived with a big time performance. Ashley ran 32 times for 166 yards and looks like the player we all heard he was coming into the season. Quarterback Will Stein got the start and quite frankly, he did not play well. He took too many sacks and clearly was rattled by the West Virginia defensive pressure. Stein also made several poor throws to open receivers. I expect Adam Froman to be back under center next week against Syracuse.
The Louisville defense stepped up in a huge way. They hit people, flew to the football, and played very sound fundamentally. Louisville also used sophomore Chris Philpott as placekicker and the kid delivered. Philpott was 3-3 on field goals, accounting for all the Louisville scoring, and produced a touchback on a kickoff. Unfortunately, the Cards could not get the job done and fell to 3-6 on the season and 0-4 in the Big East. Neil will be here later for a full recap.
