Cards down the Cards 78-56; Claim 1st Ever Maybin Classic

The Louisville Cardinals used a strong effort on the glass to claim the first ever Marques Maybin Classic. Led by T-Will’s 13 rebounds, the Cards held a 46-31 edge on the boards against the hopelessly outmanned Lamar Cardinals. This game, while not pretty to watch at times, was simply a case of Louisville flexing its collective muscle against a team that I’m not too sure has a strength and conditioning program. Samardo Samuels once again paced the Cards with 15 points and Jerry Smith added 12 for his second straight double figure scoring performance. Earl Clark, who many question as to whether or not actually knew there was a game for the first few minutes, finished his Maybin Classic MVP performance with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.

The Good – Rebounding & Jerry Smith’s scoring. If we know anything about this UofL squad so far, its they can be somewhat lazy on the boards at times. They should have crushed Lamar on the glass and they did 46-31, so it is a good sign, but that kind of rebounding effort must be continued consistently throughout the season in order for them to enjoy a big year. Jerry Smith, with his 12 points last night, has scored in double figures in back to back games. While Jerry doesn’t need to score 20 points a night, he does need to be the 3 point threat UofL at times lacks. Jerry is the best pure shooter on the team and needs to score the basketball more consistently.

The Bad – FREE THROWS!!!!! This one is not difficult to figure out. UofL’s free throw shooting has been anywhere from mediocre to atrocious. Last night against Lamar, Louisville finished 13-24 from the line, which equates to 54%. Some guys are simply tough to watch at the line *cough* T-WILL *cough*. This is the one major area of concern I have with this UofL squad since they will no doubt be playing tight games once football season starts in the Big East.

The Beyond Bad – Ari Wolfe and Terry Meiners. One guy is apparently paid to do play by play for Cardinal television broadcasts and the other is apparently paid to get made fun of by Rick Pitino at halftime, but they both have one thing in common…THEY DON’T WATCH THE GAME!!!!!! Ari Wolfe is a major tool, his voice is really annoying, and if I hear him say one more time, “This is Ari Wolfe alongside friend and partner Bob Valvano” I’m pretty sure I’ll snap. Hey Ari, just say what happened, then let Bobby V. talk. Along the same lines, Terry Meiners will not be confused with a coach of basketball, or a person who has ever seen a basketball game for that matter, anytime soon. Yet again last night during the halftime interview segment, Terry Meiners asked Pitino a question that demonstrated his lack of watching the first half. This time, Pitino blatantly did not answer the question and went straight to an underhanded personal attack towards Meiners…it was awesome.

    Ahhh, good ol’ Terry Weiners….

You do realize that Terry and Rick are very good friends, right? His making fun of Terry is completely sarcastic. As for Ari, it’s time to bring back Don Russell.
