According to sources around the league it seems that this year’s Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Raven have agreed on terms for a new contract. The new deal will make Flacco the highest paid player in the history of the NFL. He will earn $120.6 million for the next six years according to the details that are just coming out tonight on the news of his latest contract.

The news about the contract was first reported by Fox Sports. Joe Flacco’s old contract could not have ended at a better time. Flacco’s postseason that ended up with a Super Bowl victory saw him pass for 11 touchdowns with no interceptions. The previous contract saw Flacco earn $6.76 million and now he has moved on to a bigger tax bracket. The Ravens were looking to get a deal done before the March 4th deadline so Flacco’s contract would not affect the salary cap which would have been around $19 million.

Last month Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said he needed to get the deal done with Flacco so the team could focus on other gaps they were looking to fill for next season. Other players that are free agents are Ed Reed and Paul Krueger.

Flacco’s agent Joe Linta told reporters that Flacco wanted to make sure his deal was not going to be a road block for other players looking to be resigned by the team. Linta said, “Joe’s not that kind of guy. Joe absolutely wants to work with the Ravens to ensure that they’re not impacted cap-wise. Joe doesn’t want to see anybody get cut as a result of this deal.”

There was some speculation to see if the contract restructuring of current star quarterbacks like New England Patriots Tom Brady and Pittsburgh Steelers Ben Roethlisberger would have an impact on Flacco’s deal. If tonight’s contract details are correct there was no correlation.

Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young spoke with USA Today about Flacco’s contract. Young said, “Joe is worth this deal because he did it when it mattered.”
