Rick Pitino is not backing off his statements of Gorgui Dieng heading to the NBA. Rick told CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman that Gorgui is “98% gone”. Rick began this push several weeks ago when he stated Gorgui, Chane Behanan, and Russ Smith would all throw their names into the mix and test the NBA waters following this season, but the tone around the Gorgui discussion (at least from Pitino) is that the beloved big man from Senegal is on his way out.
Right now, Gorgui is projected by most mock drafts as a first round pick. However, where specifically he will be taken is anyone’s guess. The one team it seems has been very interested in Gorgui is the Chicago Bulls, who have been to several games scouting him. There has also been some chatter involving the Oklahoma City Thunder, but nothing concrete.
Now, if you ask Gorgui, he continues to point out he’s a junior and to be fair to Rick, he unequivocably says Dieng will not hire an agent and if the feedback is not ideal, then Gorgui will return. In addition, UofL has confirmed Gorgui will go through Senior Day festivities on Saturday before the Cards take on Notre Dame.
Personally, it will be somewhat odd for me to watch this Senior Day knowing there’s a chance Gorgui could be back, but if he does indeed leave, it’s only appropriate for him to be able to officially say goodbye to Card Nation. Gorgui Dieng is one of the most beloved players of the Pitino era, if not of all time. If this in fact his final game at the KFC Yum! Center, we can only say thank you to the Gorgeous One.
Gorgui Dieng is truly one of a kind.
