My Take on the Fulmer-Jurich Meeting
I don’t have a whole lot of time right now, but I will quickly address the reported meeting between UofL A.D. Tom Jurich and former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer. To me, this is nothing more than Jurich simply doing his job.
After the fumbled mess that was the end of the John L. Smith era and Bobby Petrino’s repeated flirtations with other jobs, Tom Jurich placed a higher priority on hiring a coach who would view Louisville as a final destination, rather than a stepping stone. Jurich thought he found that guy in Steve Kragthorpe, but as we all know, it did not work out.
Phil Fulmer wants the Louisville job, I have no reservations saying that. I think Jurich still wants a coach that will be around for some time, or at least five years or so. Fulmer would like to do that. So if a coach, who came from a top program and has a national championship ring around his finger, tells you he wants the job, I think you’d be crazy not to listen.
That being said, I still do not think Fulmer is in the top tier of candidates for the Louisville job. However, I will say this, there are worse candidates to rebuild the Louisville football Cardinals than Phil Fulmer. If by some chance Jurich misses on his other candidates, “settling” for Phil Fulmer is not an awful option.
That’s all for now, back to the salt mines.
