Charlie Strong’s football staff is nearly complete as an offensive line coach is now on board and we are receiving strong word as to who will be the quarterbacks coach.

Dave Borbely will be coming on board to coach big hogs up front for coach Strong. Borbely, 50, has spent the past four seasons as offensive line coach for Virginia, but prior to that, has coached at schools such as Stanford, Notre Dame, and Colorado.

Offensive line coach Dave Borbely

Dave Borbely has nearly thirty years experience in collegiate coaching and has wide ranging recruiting ties. His strongest ties are in the northeast, but also has west coast ties as well. Borbely was also running game coordinator for Virginia, as well as coaching the offensive line.

Mike Groh is expected to join the Cards’ staff as quarterbacks coach. Groh, 38 and son of Al Groh, is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play at the University of Virginia.

Expected QB coach Mike Groh

Groh took over the job of quarterbacks coach for the Cavaliers in 2003 and promptly made his mark. He tutored current Texans starting quarterback Matt Schaub during his senior year and the results were a 70% completion percentage, 2,950 yards, and 18 TDs.

Groh has experience coaching quarterbacks in a spread offense, which is the type of offense we expect Mike Sanford to implement. Except for his one year coaching Schaub, all of the quarterbacks Groh has coached were dual threats.

Groh eventually took over the offensive coordinator position in 2006 and held that position until he was fired after the 2008 season. Groh has only coached at Virginia collegiately, but did spend one season as an offensive assistant for the New York Jets in 2000.

We will have more when information is available, but for now, the staff is almost complete and it’s essentially a race to the finish as Signing Day is only about three weeks away.

12:45 update – Charlie Strong offiically announced the hiring of Dave Borbely. Here is the official statement:
