Justin Burke, a Lexington, Kentucky native, has been named starting quarterback for Louisville’s season opener against the Larry Birds of Indiana State. Burke beat out junior Adam Froman and redshirt freshman Zack Stoudt. Burke won the job based on his better understanding of defenses and perhaps due to the minor back strain suffered by Froman. Burke does not have complete immunity as a starter and I expect to see all three quarterbacks see multiple possessions during the opening game.
Head coach Steve Kragthorpe said this after practice on Tuesday about naming Burke the starter, “Justin Burke will be our quarterback. I feel great about Justin’s progress through training camp and I’m excited for him. We’ve got ten more days of practice before we face Indiana State and I think he’s been a very consistent performer for us in training camp.”
When asked about whether or not Froman’s minor injury boosted Burke ahead of him, Kragthorpe responded, “Justin has played well. I wouldn’t read anything into that. Things happen, they all work out for the right reasons.”
When asked about Justin Burke’s strengths as a quarterback, Kragthorpe said, “Justin is a very intelligent player, and he’s a guy who’s got a good grasp of what we are doing offensively. He’s a guy that has a good grasp of what the defense is trying to do against him, and he’s a guy that works extremely hard.”
Coach Kragthorpe also said while meeting with assembled media after practice that Burke has the reigns to the offense for some time. He claims Burke will not have to look in the rearview mirror, at least for the foreseeable future. So basically, as long as Burke doesn’t throw three interceptions in the first couple games, we can expect to see him starting for the season.

Ladies and gentlemen, the starting quarterback for your Louisville Cardinals
