Greg Brohm, the last member of the University of Louisville’s first family of football to work with the program, was reassigned from his position as director of football operations, the school confirmed Tuesday.
U of L head coach Steve Kragthorpe replaced Brohm with Steve Adams, a graduate assistant who worked with the offense last season. Brohm was about to begin his sixth season on the Cardinals’ staff.
“I just felt I needed to make a change at that position,” said Kragthorpe in a statement through university spokesman Rocco Gasparro. “Also, this allows Greg to pursue some other opportunities.”
Kragthorpe was not made available for questions.
Gasparro said Brohm will work on special projects within the athletic department including the Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium expansion. When reached by The Courier-Journal, Brohm declined to take questions, but issued his own statement:
“The university is very important to me. I will do whatever job I am asked to do to the best of my ability. With stadium expansion and the other projects we have going on, I think there are some areas I look forward to helping with.”
Brohm, who lettered at U of L from 1989-92 as a wide receiver, had remained on staff through the offseason reshuffling that ultimately sent his brother Jeff to Florida Atlantic as quarterbacks coach.
Jeff Brohm served as U of L’s offensive coordinator last season. The Cards’ former standout quarterback and team’s Most Valuable Player in 1992-93, was ushered out when told that he could stay on the staff only in a non-coaching capacity.
Jeff Brohm was on staff for six seasons — the first five as quarterbacks coach. That included the 2004-07 tenure of his younger brother, star quarterback Brian Brohm, who was the Green Bay Packers’ second round draft pick in 2008.
The Brohm family has been associated with U of L football since the playing days of the Brohm brothers’ father, Oscar, who lettered as a quarterback in 1968-69.
Oscar Brohm could not be reached for comment. Jeff Brohm declined comment.
