UK may not have won the big one, but at least Kentucky Basketball won at least one title this season.
For the fifth consecutive season, the Kentucky Wildcats drew more fans per game to Rupp Arena than any other NCAA program in the land. UK’s average home attendance was 24,111, beating out second place Syracuse, who finished at 22,152. In fact, UK’s total home attendance of 433,989 was the highest single season number since 1993.
In UofL’s last season playing in Freedom Hall, the Cardinals drew the third most fans, coming in at 19,367 per game. Tennessee and North Carolina rounded out the top five in average attendance.
Another piece of significant news today is that former Florida big man Eloy Vargas, who spent this past season at Miami-Dade Junior College (Darnell Dodson’s former school), has eliminated Arizona from his list of options, leaving just Kentucky and Seattle. The Tuscon Citizen cites “differing agendas” as the reason for Arizona bowing out.
Vargas is coming off of a very solid JUCO season and given that he is just two years removed from being a top 50 prospect, he could be better suited to come in and contribute right away than some of UK’s other front court options, outside of Terrence Jones. UK is said to be working to organize a visit for Vargas to Lexington, so this could move quickly.
