Spring Football Update- Kentucky

UK will finish spring practice this Saturday with their annual Blue & White game at Commonwealth Stadium. The game is starts at 1pm and free to the public. I would encourage all UK fans to attend and get a first hand look at Joker’s Cats and new staff.
Saturday’s scrimmage presents an opportunity for many players, especially the younger guys. There are many guys competing for starting jobs, but there are more competing for back up roles. Several players are competing to get in the rotations, especially on the offensive and defensive lines.
Saturday is another big day for the quarterbacks and my guess is they will not wear red jerseys again. If Morgan Newton takes care of the football and uses his legs, it could be the difference in starting or backing up in 2010. I still think Hartline will be the starting quarterback in 2010, but if Newton can make more plays and use his legs wisely, he could beat out Hartline. Joker will play the guy who gives the team it’s best shot at winning.
Some other really interesting position battles to watch will be the backup running back position (Russell & George). Most felt Russell would win this job hands down, but George is having a big spring. Considering Derrick Locke is fragile, the back up running back position is a huge for the Cats. Other players to watch Saturday are Brian Adams, Aaron Boyd and E.J. Fields. These guys are competing to get in the receiving rotation. Based on feedback, many want to see Mark Crawford play with “juice” as Joker has stated and push Mister Cobble for the starting defensive tackle spot. We know both Ronnie Sneed and Jacob Dufrene have the edge as starting linebackers, but will Qua Huzzie and Ridge Wilson have something to say about that come Saturday?
In the end Saturday is a big day. It’s big for the fans, the players, coaches and recruits too. Look for more recruits to be on hand this Saturday.
