Lexington, KY – Louisville and Kentucky will renew their Governor’s Cup series at noon on Sept. 19 in Lexington. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
This rivalry is still a huge deal in the Bluegrass, if not so much outside the state’s borders. There has been some controversy in recent years regarding the scheduling of the game, which used to be played on the first weekend of the season. Kentucky demanded that the game be moved back in years when it is held in Commonwealth Stadium.
The opening week date was usually played on Sunday before Labor Day, helping to give the game more national exposure and less competition. Now it will just be part of the Saturday menu options in Week 3.
The Wildcats have won the last two games in this series and figure to be favored this year. Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe is feeling pressure from his fan base already. If he falls to 0-3 against his chief rival, his life certainly won’t get any easier.
