Joker Phillips to Larry Vaught: Morgan Newton could still challenge for #2

One of the bigger surprises of summer football practice at UK has been the fact that Will Fidler has been basically unchallenged as the number 2 quarterback on the depth chart. Before the strong performance of Mike Hartline of late, I think it’s been pretty widely expected that Newton would jump up and steal the number 2 spot and quickly create a QB controversy.
With the way that both heralded freshman QB’s, Newton and Ryan Mossakowski, have struggled to adapt to the speed of the college game and the complex UK playbook, that possibility has essentially been forgotten. Rich Brooks even went so far as to say that BOTH freshman could redshirt this season.
However, in an interview with Larry Vaught, Joker Phillips is singing a different tune. Phillips says that he anticipates that Newton will begin to challenge Fidler for #2 “a few games from now” and that it was improbable that both Newton and Mossakowski would redshirt.
My ideal scenario for the QB position is that Mike Hartline lives up to all the praise he has been receiving the past few weeks, plays well and serves as the leader at the position that the ‘Cats need. I would, though, like Morgan Newton to grab that number 2 spot and even be inserted at QB for a series or two each game with a simplified package to give the offense a big time change of pace.
