‘Dawg Bitten: UGA 72, UK 62

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Bulldogs in scoring with 24 points, and he was the one guy Kentucky was really supposed to lock up on defense. Add 12 bench points from Nemania Djurisic, and 10 from Donte’ Williams to go with the ‘Dawgs victory on Senior Night over Kentucky. Archie Goodwin had 20 points to lead the way for the ‘Cats, Wiltjer chipped in 12, Harrow with 11, and Cauley-Stein with 10 in the losing effort.

The rock-fight of a 1st half ended with Kyle Wiltjer swooping to the bucket for a lay-in. With time ticking away, Georgia’s Kentavous Caldwell-Pope launched a deep three from near the sideline that rattles in just before the halftime buzzer. If that wasn’t a bad enough, both Harrow and Goodwin were riding the pine for much of the 1st stanza with foul trouble.

Georgia didn’t make things any easier for the ‘Cats in the 2nd half. After Kentucky pulled within a bucket, Georgia went on a small spurt that included a Djurisic three-pointer that gave the ‘Dawgs a 10 point lead with 13 minutes to play. Kentucky would cut the lead back to three at 50-47, but Georgia went on another run to put the ‘Cats out of reach. After Ryan Harrow fouls out of the game with 2:57 to play, it was literally all she wrote for Kentucky’s hopes of winning in Athens, and maybe postseason play. ‘Dawgs run away with the 10-point victory, 72-62.

Kentucky’s NCAA Tournament chances are absolutely gone unless they can make something happen. They have to win at home against Florida, and make a deep run or win the whole SEC Tournament to be considered in the field. Obviously, if they win the SEC Tournament, they will get the automatic bid. However, the chips are not on Kentucky’s side at this stage. Julius Mays has made 1 shot in the past three games, and he’s supposed to be the senior leader. Allowing a sub .500 team to make 7 three-point shots and send them to the line 34 times is not going to make you worthy of anything. As frustrating as it is for a fan, I cannot imagine the frustration on the part of this team. You cannot do anything but sit back and wonder what has really happened. Do they even get along? Another dodgeball game will not fix the ‘Cats, and certainly not against SEC Champion Florida on Saturday.
