Cats Pigskin Recruiting News

With the departure of Trevard Lindley appearing more and more imminent the Cats have quickly turned their attention to a 1-star recruit who is gaining more and more attention. That 1-star recruit is CB Izauea Lanier of Gordo High School in Alabama.

“UK likes Izauea (pronounced like Isaiah) as a corner. He’s got great mobility. He can jump out of the gym,” said his high school head coach David McKinney. At 6-foot-1, 185-pounds Lanier is consistently running the 40 in 4.5 or under. With his overall size and athleticism, he’s capable of being a lockdown corner. But that’s not where it ends.”

McKinney also said that Lanier, who is a great open field runner with great speed and just a great all-around athlete, played both running back and wide receiver last season, accounting for 900 yards rushing and 900 receiving. He also returned two punts for touchdowns.

When asked what he needs to improve on, “He’s got to get physically stronger, but that will come with maturity. He beefed up to 190 before the season, but he dropped back down to 185 by the end of the year. I think he’ll carry 200-pounds easily once he gets to college,” said McKinney.

He led Gordo High to a 9-4 record last season and is getting interest from Troy, UAB, Mississippi State and Auburn, along with Kentucky. He has been in contact with Kentucky and it looks as if they have something set up.

“Steve Brown saw him here. They really like him. They were first to get on him. I think Izauea likes Kentucky,” said McKinney.

Catching up with UK Football Committs – TE Terrell Mitchell, DT Myron Walker, S Jarvis Walker

At 6-foot-5, 210-pounds Terrell Mitchell (Powder Springs, GA, McEachern High School) is a special athlete capable of being a major player at the college level. While listed as a tight end, Mitchell spends more time lined up on the outside using his physical talents to stretch the field and create match-up problems for defensive backs.

Showing great hands and body control makes Mitchell a serious threat as a receiver. As a high school player Mitchell is capable of snatching the ball and hand catching the ball outside of his body frame. One area that makes Mitchell a major problem for defensive backs is the ability to go up to the highest point and make the catch.

Don’t look at Terrell Mitchell as a traditional tight end. He’s a wide receiver with a big frame that has the ability to become a major target in the years to come. There will need to be some adjustment but in the end Mitchell will be a big-time player for the Wildcats.

DT Myron Walker and S Jarvis Walker are twins out of Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, LA. Myron is said to be very strong with a big upper body and lots of strength. He can beat double teams and he handles trap blocks very well. He runs well too. Jarvis is a big rangy kid who can cover a lot of ground with his long strides. He’s very football smart. He lines up the defensive back field. He knows what everybody is supposed to do.

While Jarvis is listed at safety there are questions about what position he will end up playing. “Some people say he can play linebacker. He’s about 200 pounds. He’d have to gain more weight,” said Roth. “He’s kind of a tweener. UK’s recruiting him as a safety,” Roth said.

After visiting many schools this summer the Walkers visited Kentucky and immediately committed and have not visited or interviewed with anyone since.

Rummel finished with a 9-2 record and lost in the second round of the playoffs.
