AJ Stewart was made aware that his scholarship would not be renewed at UK before Matt Pilgrim and Kevin Galloway, so he’s had a little bit more time to figure out his basketball future.

According to the Lexington Herald Leader’s UK hoops notebook from this morning, Stewart appears to be headed back to his home state of Florida to continue his career:

Former UK player A.J. Stewart appears to be headed for a transfer to Central Florida. He recently forwarded his transcript to the school.

But Stewart’s high school coach, Rex Morgan, wants the player to visit at least one other school before deciding. Morgan noted that Stewart signed with UK in 2006 without visiting the other schools on his final list: Illinois, Kansas State and Clemson.

Many believed Stewart would head to play Division II ball for Northern Kentucky, therefore not needing to spend a season on the bench as a redshirt. However, it looks like AJ will stay at the D-I level. This would seem to be a good choice for AJ to return to his homestate and play in a non BCS conference where he will likely be able to feature his offensive skillset and athleticism.
