Is Dennis Rodman a United States Ambassador?
Former NBA star and Basketball Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman did something that no other American has done…he met North Korea’s new leader Kim Jong Un. For many people this news probably came as a shock. It seems Kim Jong Un is a huge fan of the NBA and loved watching the Chicago Bulls when Rodman was playing with Michael Jordan.
Rodman said that President Barack Obama and Kim both have a fondness for basketball and that could be a common ground for the two to start talking. You might ask why this meeting between Kim and Rodman take place. Rodman was with the Harlem Globetrotters in North Korea for a friendly exhibition game.
In an interview with ABC News Rodman spoke of what Kim wanted from Obama. Rodman spoke to George Stephanopoulos on the ABC show “This Week” on what Kim told him, “He wants Obama to do one thing: Call him. He said, ‘If you can, Dennis – I don’t want [to] do war. I don’t want to do war.’ He said that to me.”
Some people are upset with Rodman’s new relationship especially all the issues that North Korea has had in relationship to the treatment of their people. Last week on Twitter Rodman responded to those concerns by tweeting, “I’m not a politician. Kim Jung Un & North Korean people are basketball fans. I love everyone. Period. End of story. #WORMinNorthKorea”
Who knows what will become of the relationship between the United States and North Korea, but how funny would it be if Dennis Rodman becomes an ambassador for the United States. Here is a video recapping Rodman’s trip to North Korea.
