After circulating this photog today, and receiving a lot of interesting responses, I felt it necessary to find out what the pinkie community thought on this topic. The most common reply I received was of the inquistive nature, as in ‘Do penguins got nuts?”. Well the answer is yes, sort of.
Like most vertebrates, birds have their testes inside the body cavity, just like females have internal ovaries. The paired testes are positioned cranioventrally (i.e., towards the head and towards the belly in the body cavity) to the first kidney lobe. The vas deferens, through which the spermatozoa travel from the testis, emerges laterally and reaches down to the cloaca, where it enters into the urodeum. The terminal aspect of the vas deferens is thickened and functions as a storage region, where spermatozoa undergo further biochemical changes to activate them. When birds mate, the male presses its cloaca onto the female cloaca and transfers its sperm. That is true for all birds, even for flightless penguins.
So there you are, mystery solved, penguins got nuts!! Now, would you kick them?
Well would you?
