You may ask yourself “What award could possibly be named after Chris Rix?”. No, it’s not for consistently mediocre QB’s, or for guys who seemed to lose their job 292 times but somehow regained it every time. You see, we here at straitpinkie are all about honoring unique talent. In this case the unique talent is the ability to seem like you have played a college sport for 7-10 years and make fans say “oh my god, he’s still in college?!?!”.

The key to winning this award is to gain playing time very early in your college career, and play for consecutive years for a high profile team. Your case can be helped by a few things: 1) redshirt year due to injury 2) playing point guard at Duke 3) being particularly annoying/obnoxious 4) being white (note that 2, 3, and 4 usually coincide).

There have been countless Chris Rix’s throughout my time watching college sports, and we need a place to honor them (YES WE CAN) and make fun of them (YES WE CAN), and straitpinkie is that place (YES WE CAN)
. The award was originally to be named after Brian Cardinal, but I didn’t want people to think this was an award for garbage basketball players who managed to get an absurd contract from an unbelievably dumb organization. With that said, the namesake of the award is up for consideration, and if a better namesake shows himself, he will be honored.

I’m going to start things off by naming a few of the charter recipients, and open things up for nominations. Also, please note that all UK players are ignored, because I don’t think a fan has proper perspective to evaluate membership of players in his/her team.

  1. I believe I have your namesake – DREW NEITZEL. He had to have played at MSU for a good 21 consecutive seasons. I hear Tom Izzo is still trying to convince the NCAA for another year of eligibility for him.

And along with RIx, wasn’t Chris Weinke legitimately like 27 when he left FSU?

    I’ll keep thinking tomorrow. . .

  2. Even though he is a UK player I’d like to nominate my boy Wayne Turner. He played in the most college basketball games ever so he’s gotta belong by default no? This news is about a month old, but the East Kentucky Miners have signed Wayne for the 08-09 season.

PIKEVILLE, KY. – One of the top players in the history of the University of Kentucky men’s basketball program has signed to play for the East Kentucky Miners during the 2008-09 season. East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley has announced the signing of 6-2 guard Wayne Turner. Turner, who won two national championships with Kentucky, holds the NCAA record for most games played in a four-year career (151). The Boston native ranks ahead of former Duke standout Christian Laettner (148) for the most games played record. Turner is Kentucky’s all-time leader in steals. He is fourth in all-time assists for the Wildcats.

  3. Kansas City- You have Greg Paulus, but how about former Notre Dame QB Ron Paulus. He was the next big ND QB for at least 5-6 seasons. And let’s not forget Ron Dayne. It is easy to break the all time rushing mark when you are in college longer than Tommy Boy.

  4. Julius Hodge from NC State…that kid had to have been in school for at least 7 years.

  5. Ron Pawlus and Ron Dayne, done and done.

  6. I’m a Gator fan, and I can’t beleive Walter Hodge is still there.

    How about these players:

    Dicky Lyons Jr., Kentucky,
Raymar Morgan, just a JR now, Michigan St.
    Robert Dozier, Memphis,
    Curtis Painter, Purdue
    Hasheem Thabeet, Uconn

  7. Not as big a name but Donny Nickey played at Ohio State for like 9 years.

  8. Also Matt Grothe

  9. Reggie Ball

  10. Good call on Reggie Ball. I never would have thought of him on my own, but he is perfect.

  11. Aaron Miles from KU, Carl Krauser from Pitt.

  12. I am a Penn State fan and I am pretty sure that Jeff Smoker played quarterback for MSU in every game between the two schools during the 90’s and he also fits multiple aspects of the above criteria.

  13. Old school UM. Rusty Mederis. Had at least 4 knee surgeries. At the U in the 90’s for at least 7 years. Had to be.

  14. Any left handed guard at Arizona named Stoudamire. There’s been at least one for the past 32 years.

  15. Evan Eschmeier from Northwestern. Dude had to have spent about a baker’s dozen years in the Big Ten

  16. weinke has got to be a top on any list about being in college for too long. He retired form the nfl after like 4 seasons. mostly because he was already 40

  17. Bobby Newcombe – Nebraska WR/RB/QB/PR/KR

Probably played in 45 games in his college career.

  18. Bobby Newcombe might be my favorite so far, it seems like he was a starter at a different position every year he was there.

  19. Good call on Evan Eschmeier who actually received 2 medical redshirts. My buddy and I developed this “Chris Rix award” long ago, only we know it as the “Preston Shumpert” award who played 13 seasons for Syracuse. Also in the hall of fame would be Jess Settles of Iowa who received more redshirts than any player in NCAA history (according to me). Carl Krauser is also in the hall of fame for this as I think he was actually 26 years old when he graduate (seriously). And if you’re talking Duke, Shane Battier seemingly played more seasons than any of the guards you name (throw in plugs by Dickie V to make it seem like a decade).
And you may not name Kentucky players, but Tubby Smith’s kids seemed like they sucked for at least 7 years in Lexington, especially fugly Saul.

Currently Ian Johnson has been the running back at Boise for at least 7 straight seasons.

  20. Check out Jess Settles from The University of Iowa
The award might have to be re-named for him

  21. Ohio State has had a tailback named Maurice Wells for the past decade and a half.

  22. I wish Carl Krauser was still around…. It wouldn’t surprise me if Drew Tate was still QB’ing at Iowa………

  23. I second the Jess Settles nomination, he was granted not one, but TWO years of additional eligibility under the injury hardship waiver and ended up playing basketball for Iowa for 6 seasons! The sad thing was he was an amazing player before the back injuries (which led to the two redshirt years) set him back…

Another Iowa-centric nomination might be Luke Recker (who played for three DI teams: Indiana, Arizona, and Iowa)…

  24. Jess Settles (two medical redshirts=almost automatic) and Luke Recker (two transfers=almost automatic) are definite honorees.

  25. I want to nominate Tyler Hansbrough…it seems as if he has been at UNC forever.

  26. Quinton Thomas at UNC
    Paul Davis at michigan state
    mustafa shakur at arizona

  27. by SaltySamurai on December 16th, 2008 2:50 pm

Tennessee’s had a punter named Colquitt for roughly 14 years. I nominate him.

  28. What about Jason White it seemed every year he was there blowing the big games away

  29. Got to be every Tennesse QB and Punter. Hasn’t a Clausen and Colquitt been there since the early 90s?

  30. Drew Lavender at Oklahoma/Xavier

  31. Danny Farmer, WR UCLA,
    Dustin Colquitt, PK/P Tennessee
    Carlos Huerta, PK Miami
    Gordon Ely-Kelso, P/PK Georgia
Cameron Dollar – G UCLA Basketball

  32. gotta have Acie Earl from Iowa on there. he played at least 13 years of big ten basketball

  33. Evan Eschmeyer. I swear he played at Northwestern my entire childhood. And just to continue the spirit he went back to Northwestern to pursue a graduate degree. Good call on Wojo since he really hasn’t left and is now teaching a new crop of destined to be NBA-flop Dukies that are more or less clones of Wojo himself. 90s college basketball is filled with Chris Rix award winners.

  34. by dirtyhersh on December 16th, 2008 3:36 pm

    josh shipp G/F UCLA

i’m pretty sure he was college teammates with baron davis

  35. by kfrase3530 on December 16th, 2008 4:11 pm

Lee Suggs was at V Tech from when I was 9 until i graduated high school

  36. Wow, when I first saw this the first thing that came to mind was Jess Settles!

I’d also have to say the Paulus has to be on the list for sure.

Another sleeper here is Ian Johnson from Boise State. He proposed to his girlfriend I believe right after the new millenium, I remember him talking about being worried about his computer…

  37. Chad Henne?

    What about Mike Hart?

  38. I’m pretty sure the wide receiver combination making colt mccoy (sloth from goonies) so good, Quan Cosby and Jordan Shipley were at Texas when they joined the Big XII

  39. Even though he just came into the spotlight this year, but Jordan Shiply.

Being from Texas, it seems like he’s been there a LONG time (and thank god because he is real good). He has been there 5 years, and is widely expected to appeal for and receive a 6th year of eligibility (he redshirted, then medical redshirted TWO years because of hamstrings).

  40. Kyle Wright
    Erik Ainge
    Wyatt Sexton?
    Drew Weatherford, is still there
    Roy Hibbert
    Matt Walsh

  41. by Brandon Priddy on December 16th, 2008 5:41 pm

Gotta go with Donovan McNabb – and add to that, for longterm haters of the gridiron Orange(men) Mr. Marvin Graves. Basically from 1987 until 1998, one of these two was playing QB for the Orange(men).

  42. by Shawn Hienton on December 16th, 2008 5:49 pm

The original member, and namesake of this award, should be Travis Ford. He played against Duke when Laettner went perfect from the field in the Regional Semifinal with Feldhaus, Gimel Martinez, and Jamal Mashburn. He played at UK for at least 16 years and looked older than my father.

  43. a.j. price at uconn

  44. Don’t forget Brock Berlin. He played QB for two seasons at Florida with Rex Grossman and then sat out the 2002 season so he could transfer to Miami and be the starter there for two years.

A rare example of a player who played games in at least part of six seasons was QB Charlie Batch at Eastern Michigan University. Then immediately after college he became the starter for the Detroit Lions, where he got benched or injured 2 or 3 times every year for four seasons. I’m 26 years old and I’ve been watching this guy play for over half my life.

  45. by Todd Green on December 16th, 2008 6:14 pm

I think that this is awesome. I am a huge Seminole fan and the best day was when that guy left.

How about Chad Henney. He seemed to be at Michigan forever and was pretty disapointing also.

  46. How can you leave out Jason White? The guy was at OU for 6 years, thanks to two medical redshirts, one for each knee.

  47. by chris drumm on December 16th, 2008 6:59 pm

    scoonie penn and demarcus nelson.

  48. Brock Berlin FTW!

  49. John Navarre (Michigan QB), Tyquan Dean (Louisville hoops)

  50. you forgot the granddaddy of them all….. CHEROKEE PARKS

  51. How ’bout your boy Dominic James…he is still at Marquette. Man was gonna go pro after his junior year of high school.

  52. Alot of these postings don’t belong here, just of the top of my head: aj price & hasheem thabeet (uconn) are junior and sophmore respectively. Hansbrorogh is a 3yr player, Ron Dayne played the standard 4yrs. I think the lot of you idiots just put down the players that have been dominated your lousy teams, who ever they maybe. I contend that being a above average player is enough to keep you off this list. What I do agree with regarding the list: being an FSU fan Rix is the gold standard, so is weinke. Mcnamara and neitzel are good ones too, all the rest are just wannabe fans putting in their two cents acting like they know. KEEP IT TO YOURSELF IDIOTS!

  53. Rony Seikaly played 12 years for Syracuse. Swear to god.

  54. how can you forget the two KU players. Kirk Heinrich and Nick Collison played at Kansas for like 30 years.

  55. My buddy and I have played this game for about 4 years now, but we started it with the Gerry McNamara Award. I’ll give you Rix, but I think G-Mac is about as epic as any.
I would also like to add Eduardo Najera at OU, seemed like he was there forever.

  56. by dirtyhersh on December 17th, 2008 1:33 am

jawad williams was on UNC for 45 years

  57. What about any running back for Ohio State named Wells…most notably Maurice, I swear he started out backing up Maurice Clarett.

  58. is it just me or was j.j. reddick given tenure at duke and only recently retired? that guy was around forever

  59. It’s crazy that we think of the same people. I always thought that Reggie Ball QB at georgia tech for about 8 years. irony is that he was suspended for his last game.

J.J. Redick was at duke for 6 years atleast.

I nominate Jimmy Claussen to receive this award in 2011.

  60. HEY, GANG… Impressive how much thought you’ve all put into this, and who’d have thunk there’d have been so many qualified candidates available. Anyway, let me introduce the bracket buster into this debate. John Manley, basketball player at Cal Poly. What’s that? You’ve never heard of Cow, err, Cal Poly? That’s okay. The NCAA hasn’t, either, which is why “The Man” gets to keep playing year after year, decade after decade. This dude migrated out from Minnesota the first time it ever snowed there, then started shooting hoops on a sunny, warm January afternoon at an idyllic, beach-adjacent location. In time, the California State University system decided to build a polytechnic campus beneath and around him. He’s of sound character. Has bachelor degrees in every major Cal Poly offers, along with a few advanced degrees. School produced Ozzie Smith, John Madden and “Weird” Al Yankovic. Fear this guy, he’s legit. His birthname. Fastbjörn Gunnarsson, was anglicized over the years.

  61. Brooks Bollinger – QB at Wisconsin from what seemed like the Ron Dayne days until the Booker T and Anthony Turner days. Also Terrance Dials for Ohio State B-ball…4 year starter with a medical redshirt in there. Brian Cook for Illinois b-ball

  62. I might have to add Jackie Manuel from UNC bball, he of the ambiguous first name-last name transition (is it Jack E. Manuel, is it Jack Emanuel, or is it Jackie Manuel? I still am not totally sure).

  63. by Mike Keenan on December 17th, 2008 8:39 am

We used to have a saying for guys that seemed to be there forever were on teh Carlos Huerta Plan. I think Heurta kicked for the whol decade of the 90’s for Miami.

Also J.J. Joe seemed to be running the veer at Baylor’s for about 6-7 years.

  64. David McClure @ dook! WTF….that kid has been there 4ever.

  65. Carlos Huerta was the kicker for the University of Miami in the late ’80’s through the mid ’90’s for 7 years straight. His freshman year was Howard Schnellenberger’s last year at UM, his career spanned the length of the Jimmy Johnson era, and then won a national title with Dennis Erickson. He may have also had a brief stint under Butch Davis.

  66. The original was Milt Wagner at Louisville. Seemed like he was there most of the decade of the 80’s

  67. FACT: Nik Caner-Medley spent about 10 years at Maryland. Sucked all 10 of those years.

  68. [...] Chris Rix Lifetime Achievement Awards.  [Strait Pinkie] [...]

  70. I used to call this the TOBY BAILEY AWARD. He played for UCLA with the O’Bannon brothers his frosh year and I think he just graduated last year.

  71. How ’bout David Padgett? That fucker just didn’t go away. Also, Chris Quinn and Chris Thomas from Notre Dame.

    Oscar Davenport- QB North Carolina

  73. carlyle holiday

  74. I guess Patrick Pinkney gets left off because he doesn’t play at a high profile enough place– East Carolina.

On the other hand, next year will officially be his 6th year there. He played his first game in 2004, and he still has a year left.

  76. Did anyone ever notice that Iowa football had a Thigpen on the roster at DB from about ‘81 through ‘04? He had a bit part in the movie ‘The Program’ when Eastern played Iowa. He’s gotta be at the top of this list.

  77. I am honestly more shocked at the Kid Rock nomination.
