Learn about it:
The celebration of Cinco de Mayo varies vastly between the United States and Mexico, the country in which the holiday originated.
Contrary to the belief of many Americans, Cinco de Mayo, which is Spanish for today’s date of May 5, is not a celebration of Mexico’s independence.
Mexico’s official Independence Day falls on Sept. 16, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called for the end of Spanish rule in 1810. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over imperial French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
