Pinkie Previews Thursday Night NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers (6-6) at Cleveland Browns (1-11)

By: Stella | December 9th, 2009 | Category: Pinkie's Picks - Sports

In the NFL Network’s Thursday night matchup this week, the Steelers and Browns face off in an AFC North game at the Dawg Pound. You can’t really call this a showdown or rivalry, as it has been a completely one-sided affair since the Browns re-entered the league. Pittsburgh was reeled off 12 strait wins over the Brownies, and has a 17-1 series lead since 2001.

Both teams are currently mired in a losing streak, but Pittsburgh’s four-game skid is actually somewhat surprising, as compared to the Browns expected suckiness. With Troy Polamalu becoming a victim of the Madden cover injury curse, Pittsburgh is now on the outside looking in when it comes to the AFC playoff picture. They have dropped games over the past month to the powerhouse Chiefs and Raiders, prompting coach Mike Tomlin to promise personnel changes for this week’s game.

Cleveland’s losing streak has reached seven since they won a 6-3 thriller over Buffalo in week five. Apparently, coach Eric Mangini’s tactic of fining players 1,700 dollars for taking a bottle of water doesn’t make players want to play for him. Imagine that. While the Browns offense had reached a pathetic level of historic proportions over the last few years, the last few weeks the team has at least been competitive, losing by single digits the past three games.

These two teams met back in week six at Heinz Field with Pittsburgh coming out on top 27-14 thanks to Roethlisberger hanging 417 passing yards on the Cleveland D. This time, however, the Steelers most likely wont have Hines Ward (hammy) or Polamalu (knee). Regardless of who sits out because of injuries or coach’s decisions, you have to like the Steelers at home against the ‘Manginius’ and the Browns. Pitt wins 31-14.

Raise your hand if you think taking bottles of water is a cardinal sin.

Chumps vs. Yumps: Week 14 Results

By: Carl H | December 6th, 2009 | Category: Pinkie's Picks

The 2009 season has come to a close.  The Yumps took a narrow one point victory this week, but the Chumps held on to take the regular season title 259-249.  P Crush pulled off a perfect Championship Week to tie Guy for the regular season crown with 49 correct prognostications out of a possible 70.  Miller also pulled off a perfect Championship Week to tie me for last place with 37 correct.  Katie rode the Civil War winner Oregon Ducks to a Yump Division title, 42-41 over Leah.

The slates will be wiped clean and the Chumps and Yumps will battle it out for the Bowl Championship.  So with only 432 bowl games left to predict, Here are the final regular season standings:

Pinkie Previews Thursday Night NFL: New York Jets (5-6) v. Buffalo Bills (4-7)

By: Stella | December 3rd, 2009 | Category: Pinkie's Picks - Sports

In the fourth stanza of the NFL Network’s Thursday night matchups, executives picked a real doozy with a divisional matchup between two sub-.500 AFC East teams.

Although the game is a home game for the Bills, it will actually be played across the border in Toronto at the Rodgers Center Centre. Luckily, the Rogers Centre is where the Blue Jays play, so the canuck fans are accustomed to mediocre professional sports, which is what will most likely be on display when the two teams take the field.

Bills owner/deranged old geezer Ralph Wilson had a bright idea to start playing one home game per year in Toronto in an attempt to appeal to the few Canadian fans who aren’t already locked in to the hockey season. Last year was the Bills first crack at this tactic, and it paid great dividends, as Buffalo lost by 13 to the Dolphins in front of a crowd that was a mix of Miami and Buffalo supporters.

Although the Jets are a three-point favorite, Buffalo defeated NY in overtime 16-13 on October 18th, thanks to Jets’ QB/ESPN golden boy Mark Sanchez throwing five interceptions. That victory couldn’t save Bills’ coach Dick Jauron’s job, though, as he was given his walking papers a few weeks ago. Coaching the team in the interim is Perry Fewell, who has never been a head coach and probably won’t be in Buffalo once the season is finished, as the organization has been chasing Mike Shanahan as if he were a recently divorced MILF.

Both teams are coming off solid wins, as the Jets, who have burned out after a 3-0 start, stifled Carolina in a 17-6 victory. Buffalo reeled off 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter en route to a 31-14 win over the Dolphins, putting a damper on Miami’s playoff hopes.

Look for Buffalo’s Charmin-soft run defense to get a steady dose of Thomas Jones, who has quietly put together a solid season for the Jets (959 yds-9TD). Nostradamus told me to expect the J-E-T-S to ruin the Maple Syrup Bowl with a 24-13 victory.
