Local Yump!!! Olivia from PRP

By: nickev | March 9th, 2010 | Category: Local YUMP!!!

Headshot1

I was born in Louisville and have lived here all 21 years of my life! I graduated from Pleasure Ridge Park High School and loved every minute of it! I feel like I have accomplished a great deal for myself in such a short period of time. I have been singing since I could talk and that is the only thing I want to do with my life. My addiction is being on stage and I would stay up there all day if the crowd wanted me to!

I started my own band two years ago and we have been playing in the Louisville and Southern Indiana area ever since. You can find our schedule, photos, contact information, and media on my website: oliviacountry.com. I have opened for artists such as Chuck Wicks and Trace Adkins and have played at Thunder Over Louisville, 4th Street Live, Hardrock Café, the Kentucky State Fair, Horseshoe Casino, Legend’s Bar, and numerous spots in Nashville. I hope to share my love of music with the world in the very near future as I am recording my first original album in March!

OliviaPinkie2

1. Cards or Cats, favorite player?

I bleed red!! I do go to UofL, of course! I would have to say my favorite basketball player was T-Will! He’s so energetic and gets not only his team, but the fans into the game every time! But, baseball is my favorite sport!

OliviaThrowinL

2. Who would you cast to play you in a movie?

Since I get, “You know you look just like Reece Witherspoon?” at least once a day I guess I will go with her! What a wonderful compliment to be compared to her! She’s so gorgeous, talented, and accomplished! Funny story, I was at Derby a couple years back and, thanks to my great-uncle who was chairman of the Derby Festival, we got boxed seats. Being from Louisville and an annual visitor to the infield at Oaks, my family and I were not used to being in dresses and big hats at Churchill Downs! We were sitting in our seats and this woman came up to me and asked for my autograph! When I signed Olivia Henken, I think she realized under that big hat I was NOT Reece Witherspoon!

3. What’s the first thing you notice when you meet a guy?

Gotta say the smile! Gets me every time! I think a guy with a nice smile means he loves to laugh and have a good time, just like me!

Singing at the Fair1

4. What approach is most likely to work with you?

I’m not a big partier and I don’t frequently visit the bars so I haven’t had too much experience with pick-up lines or “approaches”. I’ve been dating the same guy for four years and we met on MySpace…another funny story!

5. Would you rather date an ugly, funny guy, or a gorgeous guy who is an a-hole?

I’ll have to go with ugly and funny! Looks fade and in the crazy world of entertainment, you are constantly doing something. From traveling to doing shows to recording in the studio, you never seem to stop. So, I think it is important to have someone around you with a positive attitude and at the end of the day makes you laugh. I’ve met my fair share of “a-holes” and I think they just shed a negative light on your life and make you an unhappy person and I don’t need that!

sitting-shot-color-600

6. Dumb and Dumber: Greatest movie ever or Worst movie ever?

I wish I could have a penny for the looks on everyone’s faces when I say: I’ve never seen it!

7. How many pushups can you do?

Well, after starting the first video of p90x recently, I have found out the hard way I can only do about 5! (lol)

8. The Federal Reserve recently raised the discount rate since the start of what has largely been referred to as the Great Recession. Do you believe that this move is primarily a symbolic attempt intended to signal a warning to banks that their bloated balance sheets have been largely unregulated for too long, or is this a harbinger for further attempts to curb a predicted period of inflation after the unprecedented actions taken to loosen up the credit markets?

Huh?! I’m sorry, you lost me at “The”. Is this a serious question?

Local YUMP!!! – Sam from Jeffersonville

By: nickev | August 25th, 2009 | Category: Local YUMP!!!

n538803988_2643473_4940176

I’m an Indiana girl, born and raised. I’m rebellious and hardcore; but also cute as a button. I’m a dangerous girl that is loaded with girl power ammunition and am ready to fire. My typical all black attire might throw you off, but I am not an emotionally distraught emo girl, but rather, I have the heart of a poet and always choose to see the positive side of life.

sammy-c-0011-small-pinkie

Music, art, and poetry are huge parts of my life, they keep me sane. I dream that one day my poetry will be taught with the greats, and hopefully that day comes before I die. Acoustic music is the best. There is nothing like the sound of a guitar being played.

n544650018_4779156_3256

I am a warm hearted, caring person. No matter how much I am burned by it, I doubt I’ll ever change. I enjoy volunteering and giving back to my community. Feels good knowing you made a difference.

n538803988_2360693_4312884

I like baking and creating new meals. I just learned to ride a motorcycle, and its my new addiction. I enjoy concert going and comedy clubs.

n544650018_6279632_3013381

I have a nursing degree, but choose to have more freedom and I work full time at Hooters of Clarksville. My job is great, my bosses are awesome, and the girls I work with are a blast.

sam-hooters-both

I enjoy life and try to live it to the fullest. I would love to travel more, but just haven’t had much time to. There isn’t much more to learn. I’m just a simple girl living in a complex world.

n538803988_2360683_1124164

1. Cards/Cats, favorite player? I’m not really into college sports. I’m more of a pro football kinda girl..Go Packers!! :)

2. How many pushups can you do? I’m top heavy, so not many.

n544650018_6373048_2703425

3. Do you have any tattoos? How many/where? I have 6. My sign on the back of my neck, kanji lettering on my shoulder and down my spine(meaning I listen with my heart, mind, body and soul), ‘Sam I am’ on my right hip, respect mine on my left foot, and four stars on my left foot.

n544650018_6288133_1552978

4. What’s the best/worst pick-up line/lines you’ve ever heard? Well, because I have ‘Sam I Am’ tattooed on my hip, I get “I like green eggs and Ham” a lot.

5. Who would you cast to play you in a movie? Hmm, thats a tough one. Someone badass thats for sure. Prob Angelina.

My name is Leah and I am from New Albany, Indiana. No…I’m not a IU fan, seriously I very much dislike the Hoosiers!! (sorry to offend) I graduated from New Albany HS in 2001. I am currently working on my BA in Journalism at IUS, and working fulltime at Pegatron Technologies as a Computer Tech for Asus.

That would have to be Brittany Murphy!!

Local YUMP!!! – Katie of the St. Matthews Area

By: Carl H | May 4th, 2009 | Category: Local YUMP!!!

Louisville native, University of Kentucky graduate, and now Straitpinkie Local Yump, Katie of the St. Matthews Area:

00strait-pinkielambda-chi-ceo-office-ho-party

Short Bio: Born and raised in Louisville, KY. I’ve lived in the same house in St. Matthews all my life (minus the 4 years I was at UK). Yes, I still live at home but to my defense, I’m only 22…turn 23 in July. I’ve got the best family in the world too! There’s dad, mom, me, my younger brother and our dog Maggie. My brother graduates from Northern Kentucky University in May 2010 and majors in International Studies and Political Science. You can quote me, he will be famous one day!

I will admit, I’ve been a Catholic school girl pretty much my whole life too. I went to Our Lady of Lourdes then on to Sacred Heart Academy, class of 2004. I did actually have one nun teach me English at SHA my freshman year, a frequently asked question of us ladies having grown up in the Catholic school system. I wouldn’t have traded it for the world though! GREAT times!

naughty-school-girl-halloween-2008

More recently, I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Kentucky (C-A-T-S!!!) with a BA in Integrated Strategic Communications. I know, usual reaction, what the F*** is that? Basically, it was the major you took if you wanted to pursue a career in advertising. And I did! Now, I work at the largest advertising agency in Kentucky, Creative Alliance. The agency is downtown, which I was kind of nervous about to begin with, but now I think working downtown is something everyone should experience. It is quite interesting (and I’m really close to 4th Street Live! and all their good restaurants so score one).

03uk-graduation

The two things I’ve really stuck with throughout my days are dance and soccer (and many other sports- HUGE tom boy when I was younger- very guilty – still kind of am). I started both at the age of five.  Continued soccer through my junior year at Sacred Heart, quit senior year, blah, blah. Too bad during what would have been my senior season, the Valkyries won the school’s first State Soccer Championship. Yea, talk about kicking yourself in the ass… But now I play in a co-ed indoor soccer league at Mockingbird Valley (Mock-yea-ing-yea-bird-yea yea yea…) with some friends, GO WAGGZ! I started playing indoor in 8th grade at Mockingbird so it feels great to be back and playing again!

And last but not least, my dancing. I was the little girl who started ballet classes and actually stuck with them, haha. I think it’s awesome they make NFL players and others sometimes take dance lessons because it really does teach you ridiculous muscle control, balance and agility. Hell yea! I just finished dancing at UK, not on THE dance team though. The University of Kentucky Dance Ensemble was more of a student group, all student choreographed dances, etc. If you wanted to dance at UK but didn’t want to be as serious as the actual dance team, you came to us! And I’m not going to lie, we were pretty damn good!

dancing-on-stage-at-uk

Bottomline right now though…I love summer and most of all THE LAKE!!! Nolin in particular (and occasionally Dale Hollow or Rough River). In the words of our man Alan Jackson, G-O-O-D T-I-M-E that spells good time! Give me a Hank Jr. cd, case of beer and someone to drive me around on the boat all day and I’m set. Summer ‘09 here we come! Kress and Roberts camps say what!

on-the-boat-my-fave-spot

1. Cats or Cards? Favorite Player? OHHHHH C-A-T-S CATS! CATS! CATS! I bleed blue baby! Did anyone else catch the freakin awesome rave party in UK’s library a few weeks ago? Genius. Needless to say nothing of that awesome caliber ever took place at Willy T. while I was there, sadly. If you haven’t seen it, watch it here: “UK library rave party” and see why our students kick ass! Fave player…probably Wayne Turner. #5!!! That was my lucky number and he was a point guard too (position I played when I did play b-ball back in the day). Although more recently sticking with my man, Tayshaun Prince. I was very sorry to see LeBron sweep the crap out of the Pistons, but he is the man- MVP!

                             pistons-wizards-game-love-tayshaun  cold-football-game

2. What’s the best/worst pick-up line(s) you’ve ever heard? I’ve never really had a lot of pick up lines used on me honestly but one of the funniest ways a guy tried to talk to me was at Tinseltown maybe freshman year of high school, he wrote his name and number on a dollar bill and threw it at me as I was walking out of the theater. I wasn’t sure exactly how to take that one but it was funny…and no, I’m not a smelly pirate hooker either. Please don’t throw money at women in a movie theater gentlemen.

halloween-2006

3. How many pushups can you do? Wow, pushups. Upper body strength, not my forte. I could probably bust out maybe a few sets of 10. I would do real push ups though, not girl ones. I hate girl pushups.

4. Do you have any tattoos? How many/where? Currently don’t have any. I want some but I don’t do well with needles. I literally almost passed out when I got my belly button pierced.

Local YUMP!!! – Kristin of the Highlands/Cherokee Park Area

By: Carl H | April 7th, 2009 | Category: Local YUMP!!!

me5

Straitpinkie's first ever local Yump! of the Week is Louisville's own Kristin.

pink

Short Bio: I am a native Louisvillian—born and raised in this wonderful city. I have the best family one could ever ask for; they have given me everything I could ever want or need. My parents are the most amazing on this planet. They have been married for an astounding 42 years and counting after meeting each other at the University of Louisville as a former UofL basketball player and the official Cardinal bird mascot!

I have one brother who is 15 months older than me; mess with me and he will send his big black lab in your direction (and my Pomeranian will be right behind). I grew up in the Catholic school system—St. Agnes Grade school, then on to Sacred Heart Academy High School (don’t worry, I wasn’t scarred by any priests, however I also don’t have a penis).

meleaves

Volleyball and basketball were my life up until attending the University of Louisville. I didn’t play in college because after spending every day of the year busting my a$$ for Varsity Volleyball/Basketball (as well as joining travelling teams for each) I had had enough. I was burnt out by age 14, literally, but continued on out of loyalty (as well as partial enjoyment, and I was good at them—especially volleyball).

meee

I ended up earning my B.A in Psychology from UofL, as it was the only subject that could hold my attention. I am currently contemplating going back for a Master’s. Presently, I work at The Brook Hospital (a psychiatric hospital) while also writing articles as the Louisville Singles Examiner for Examiner.com. I love both jobs.

I am a pretty laid-back kind of girl. You will usually see me sporting some comfortable clothes (maybe a little too often; I was a giant tom-boy when I was younger). However, I do clean up quite nicely when I make the extraordinary effort that it feels to make me do this.

hallow07too

I consider myself a caring, passionate, goofy, unique, fun, random, and special person. I tend to be an introverted dreamer, of sorts, while I have my moments of busting out of my shell. Therefore, my close friends know me best and have seen the many facets, good and bad, of my exquisite personality (I am also slightly sarcastic).

1. Cats or Cards? Favorite Player? Cards for life; this year, my favorite player is T-Will, but I honestly am not a die-hard fan or anything, unlike the rest of my family.

mehat

2. What’s the worst pick-up line/lines you’ve ever heard? Hmm, that’s a toughie. I can’t think of anything that sticks out in my mind that someone has said to me in person; online, now that’s a different story. One guy definitely had me at “Can I munch on your taco?”

3. What’s the best or most creative pick-up line you’ve heard? I would like it if a guy said, “Can I buy you a drink, or do you just want the money?” I’m not a fan of pick-up lines.

4. What approach is most likely to work with you?
I would appreciate an honest, “Hi, how are you? I think you are very beautiful and would like to get to know you.” Or something like that… I guess.
