We didn’t need him anyway.

Likely more from Guy later. Until then here’s what everyone else has to say:

KSR hates Xavier.

Ballin’ Is A Habit puts KU #1 and UK #2.

Scout’s Evan Daniels Tweets about Xavier.

Danny Jett opines on what could have been the offical candy bar of the Cats.

Jeff Goodman summarizes the whole shebang.

Coach Cal, like me, tired of hearing about this.

Unconfirmed reports: Xavier Henry has changed his mind, will attend Kentucky

By: Guy | June 30th, 2009 | Category: Cats

There is no official word as of yet, but it’s really looking like Xavier Henry finally realized he had it backwards when he chose KU and will become the final member of a 7 player recruiting class (at least right now…there is some thought that Darnell Dodson may be a question mark to get all his t’s crossed and i’s dotted to make the move to UK) that was ranked number 1 according to nearly every service before Henry.

There is no word on whether CJ will make the same move.  We’ll be watching for official word as the night progresses and into tomorrow morning.

Decision time (part III) for Xavier Henry

By: Guy | June 30th, 2009 | Category: Cats

High school seniors are only allowed to sign one National Letter of Intent with the university of their choice. However, Xavier Henry, thanks to John Calipari’s departure for the University of Kentucky, has already been signed, sealed, and delivered to both the University of Memphis and Kansas University, in that order.

There are indications this afternoon that there stands a very real chance Xavier could officially pick a school tonight for the third time.

In an interview with 610 Sports, Carl Henry confirmed that his two sons, Xavier and CJ, are reconsidering their commitment to play for Bill Self and Kansas. Jason King of Yahoo Sports and the Kansas City Star are both reporting that the Henry’s will meet as a family tonight to determine their future.

Much of the family’s indecision has stemmed from an article penned in the Kansas City Star that Carl believed portrayed the family in a negative light. The parents pushed for KU and while the boys liked the idea of playing for John Calipari, they chose to play in Lawrence to keep the family together. Those concerns seem to be not nearly as pressing to the family in light of recent events.

While Calipari himself has not been involved in the reignited interest in playing for the Big Blue, John Wall and Daniel Orton have, according to the Courier-Journal:

Carl Henry said that he’s wavering in his commitment to Kansas in part because he’s friends with UK signees John Wall and Daniel Orton, who have continued to campaign for him to join the Wildcats’ top-ranked recruiting class.

Calipari has not talked to Xavier, Carl Henry said.

Carl Henry said that Xavier told him “a couple weeks ago” that he was interested in UK. Carl Henry said he made a call to Calipari at that time.

“When my son told me that, I reached out one time,” Carl Henry said. “I called Coach Cal to see if he had a scholarship.”

UK has 12 scholarship players for the 2009-10 season. The NCAA allows 13 scholarships for men’s basketball.

We should know more later tonight, especially after Bill Self and Danny Manning make their reported trip to meet with the Henry’s.

I may have spoken too soon: Carl Henry talks about his sons’ future

By: Guy | June 30th, 2009 | Category: Cats

I said yesterday that I thought it was time to put the Xavier Henry to UK rumors to bed…I think Carl Henry is about to prove that wrong.

This is again from KU site The Shiver, which has posted a link to an interview with Carl Henry about Xavier and CJ Henry’s plans for next season on 610 Sports:

In a pre-recorded interview that will air today at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., the father of Xavier and CJ Henry spoke to 610 Sports host Chris and Cowboy about the Kansas City Star article that came out on Sunday. In the interview, Carl speaks about the possibility that Xavier Henry might not be attending the University of Kansas.

You can listen to the interview on radio or online at http://www.610sports.com/

It looked like Class of 2009 drama was going to be coming to a close as Lance Stephenson was supposed to officially decide to attend Cincinnati, but the Henry’s may be in line for some more attention. Stay tuned.

**UPDATE** I haven’t yet had the chance to listen to Carl’s interview myself, but he reportedly has confirmed that Xavier and CJ are reconsidering their decision and thinking UK. John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins may be having an effect. The family is meeting tonight to discuss the situation. I will have a full report later when I am able to listen. In the mean time, I would appreciate it if anyone who has listened can just post impressions in the comments on this post.

Samardo Samuels To Play For Jamaica

By: Biscuit | June 30th, 2009 | Category: Cards

                         samardo-samuels

University of Louisville center Samardo Samuels received a major honor this week as he was elected to play for the Jamaican National Team.  The 6′9 240 pound Samuels was born in Trelawny, Jamaica and will lead his national team into action at the Carribean Basketball Championships in the Virgin Islands.  The tournament is scheduled to start today and run through Saturday July 4th.

The Jamaican team will face Trinidad and Tobago in its opening game tonight.  They will also face the Bahamas on Wednesday and finish up group play with a game against Barbados on Thursday.  In an exhibition game last Friday against the National Basketball League of Jamaica All-Stars, Samuels led all scorers with 21 points in a victory.

Samuels averaged 11.8 points per game and 4.9 boards for the Cardinals, and was also named Co-Freshman of the Year in the Big East with Greg Monroe from Georgetown.   The 11.8 points and 4.9 boards each ranked third on the team behind lottery picks Terrance Williams and Earl Clark.

Other notable members of the Jamaican National Team include fellow Big East players Weyinmi Efejuku of Providence and Mike Coburn of Rutgers.  The team is also coached by former Charlotte Bobcats head man Sam Vincent.

Want an excuse to feel warm and fuzzy about Coach Calipari?

By: Guy | June 30th, 2009 | Category: Cats

John Calipari’s reputation as a basketball coach gets insulted on a pretty regular basis. People that stop short of calling him a “cheater” say he bends the rules to favor himself, regularly going against the spirit behind them.

I’m not going to get into defensive mode about Calipari, because those who have formed their opinions won’t be changing anytime soon. I will, though, say that I believe John Calipari is a quality person outside the world of basketball. The importance of his family to him is well known and not an act.

There is an article in the Providence Journal today about John Calipari that is further proof that he is the kind of person anyone would be lucky to call a friend, and not just because of his connections in the basketball world. You see, Calipari was in Taunton, Massachusetts this weekend for a baptism of an old friend. I encourage you to read the article, but here’s an excerpt (HT to Buzz Baker’s Twitter).

Also on the altar was Kristin Ford holding her baby, another woman, and a dark-haired man in a dark suit whose back was to me.

I didn’t think anything about it until he turned around and I saw that it was Calipari.

What exactly was going on here?

What was Calipari doing?

I knew that Jersey used to occasionally sit on the UMass bench when Calipari was there, and his son Greg was one of Calipari’s student managers for a year. I knew that he and Father Jay often made the ride to UMass in those days.

But that had been long ago and far away, more than a decade ago. And in that time Calipari has gone from a coaching star on the rise to the height of his profession, the newly named coach at Kentucky, one of the most prized jobs in all of college sports. And this was a Sunday afternoon in June, far away from his new Kentucky home.

“Kristen asked me to be one of the godparents of her child, and I wanted to be here for her,” he said.

It seems that Kristen Ford has remained in touch with Calipari, ever since meeting him when she was just a kid. A note here, a note there. And Calipari always responded.

“I wanted her to know that she made the right choice when she decided to keep the baby,” he said. “I wanted her to know that I supported that choice. And when she called me up and asked me to do this I said, ‘I’m there.’”

In many ways Calipari’s become the poster child for the contemporary college basketball coach –– polished, slick, able to talk a dog off a meat wagon. Success follows him around like an afternoon shadow, and there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that he’s going to win big at Kentucky. He is a star in ways that would have been unimaginable when he first came to UMass, in 1988, everything all ahead of him.

But in many ways he’s never forgotten where he’s come from, and the people who helped him along the way.

Couple Gets in Argument, Then Fight Each Other with Cheetos

By: nickev | June 30th, 2009 | Category: Weird

Shelbyville, TN- Authorities said a couple got into a fight using Cheetos. The Bedford County Sheriff’s Department said 40-year-old James Earl Taylor and 44-year-old Mary S. Childers became involved in a ‘verbal altercation.’ Somehow, the orange puffy snacks were used in the assault.

Deputies said they were charged with domestic assault. No one was hurt.

According to the Shelbyville Times-Gazette, both posted bond of $2,500.

Courtesy of AOL Weird News

How hard do you have to throw a cheetoh for it to be used as an assault weapon?  I mean, dead serious, these kids would have to have canons like Henry Roengardner to pull something like this off.

We all know that the state of Tennessee loves the color orange, but isn’t this taking it a little too far?
